+1 for me. Yes, I prefer a Strat to say Strat, but it's that lightweight, good quality felt from the vintage Strat that really gets me going.

    The Conversion Corral

Here's one of the practice hats. It was a NOS Stetson shantung paper golf hat a lot like the photos below (grabbed from eBay), but with an uglier pug hatband (see below) and some pretty bad water staining. I fished it out of the "damaged goods" box for practice. The original hat band...

    The Conversion Corral

It's a 7 1/8. It's got a 4 1/4 crown at the highest point, and a 3 1/4 brim. It is extremely lightweight: lighter & finer & more flexible than the finest Montecristi I've ever held - and is so tightly weaved that it does hold water. Some runs through, but you could water a horse! I don't...

    The Conversion Corral

Built a new hat from a straw body. It's not really a conversion, but I'm going to post it here anyway. I finally bit the bullet & blocked & flanged one of my parabuntal bodies. I was going to have Tom Gomez do this one, but I don't have the loot after my big purchase, and I do have the tools...

    Western, anyone?

Thanks Olė. I appreciate that. I left them long because it is a very big hat for a very big man, and I thought they would balance well. I'll let you know if he agrees with you :-)

    Western, anyone?

Alan, I didn't get any real content from your link, unfortunately. From The American Hatter, Vol. 48, 1919:

    Western, anyone?

No, I didn't save it. I'll see if I can find it again though. It was online, I think. ... Most sources talk about the paper straw, but this from Merriam-Webster online is consistent with the older usage I mentioned. Main Entry: shantung straw Variant(s): also shantung Function: noun...

    Western, anyone?

Well said Joao. I honestly didn't try to get it perfect, thinking it was right for the western with a little character. I do want to do one precisely, but another time, and for a gentleman's hat...

    Western, anyone?

Here's a NOS 7x Shantung Hoss Cartwright hat by Biltmore in a size 7 3/4. I put a new ribbon & bow on it for a friend. First attempt at a frayed edge bow. I'm reasonably pleased. It is real straw not paper, I believe, but I could be wrong [Edit - I was wrong - it's paper]. I've...

Thanks for sharing Oliver! Truly awesome! Love that curved crown iron, and all the curling irons. It is an amazing collection of irons.

    Post New Hats Here!

I have read a lot about this. My understanding is that after selling the first cowboy hat, JB Stetson returned East and made gentleman's hats with little success, and that it was not until he sent out free samples of the Boss of the Plains and demanded a high price for the unique hat he had...

Great job! Another amateur gone pro, I love it! You did very well on the sweatband flaring.

Joao, Thoroughbred are good hats as far as I'm concerned. I know they were built by Langenberg at one point, but don't know if it was just Langenberg. Check out that thread, you'll see it on the poster of Langenberg brands.
