Interesting conversation! When you guys figure it out, let me know! At this point Biltmore might have more reliable historical knowledge than any other company on this continent, no?
Joao, maybe wheels on your next hat?
Facade, it's because the base models are iconic. :-)
The few Flagships I have seen offered have seemed to command a pretty high price though.
A side note: The Stetson 100's I have handled - all admittedly cowboy hats - have had a dense cardboard type...
As I've noted elsewhere, Ted & Marie Lee ran their "TopHatters" hat shop together for 65 years (1947-2012), first in Oakland and then San Leandro, California.
I found these photos in the materials I purchased from their estate. Their Trustee (nephew) told me to keep them. I thought they might...
For me, certain models are just iconic. The 1960's Ford Mustang was an "entry level" car that originally sold for less than many arguably better made Ford cars, but it is an iconic car despite the comparatively low price tag and corresponding quality. The Stratoliner and Whippets are like...
Thanks for the kind words fellows! I do not claim to be a professional hatter - I'm still just an obsessed amateur with a "real" career and busy family life that take a lot of my time.
T Jones, Alive and Amplified, and other amateurs here have developed very good skills, and one amateur (Bond)...
That is what I personally refer to as a "caramel" colored sweatband. The oilskin sweat protector behind the sweatband is more interesting because it dates the hat to the early 1950's. I believe there are threads here that discuss this topic in detail.
One of the last "real men" in Hollywood. RIP
Memory: 1984, HS freshman home after school, watching "Love, American Style," followed by the "Rockford Files."
Bond, I cannot be alone in noticing that the stitching on your brim trimming has noticeably improved with experience. You should be proud. Well done, sir! I agree with you regarding the felt on the old hommies. I have a couple saved up to do the same thing with, but my machine sewing skills...
Internal side to side & front to back measurements will let you calculate approximate hat size. The brim tear doesn't look fixable to me, but I'm not a straw expert. Where is the other break? It looks like a good quality panama - if the crown is sound & the price is right, it could be the...
Good points, all. Need will out, and in my experience folks who grew up in wartime (and my Portuguese family members, New Englanders & farmers) waste nothing.
There were also still lots of blocks & flanges at TopHatters, so it's not like they hurt their business by doing this. When bunched...
I watched the video on YouTube some time back, and believe it also cuts the sweat from the leather. Admittedly, I may be misremembering...
"Faint hat never won fair lady"
I have a few NOS liners that I would like to see find happy homes with loungers whose vintage lids are no longer properly adorned with matching liners.
I am not looking to get rich here, but I want to know you own the matching hat or the purpose of offering them here is defeated. Please PM me...
