When I was a kid, my father loved the Red Skelton show. I still remember the Clem Cadidlehopper character. Who knew that Red tried his hand at fiction?
I guess it's the thrill of the hunt that has always drawn me to the collecting world. I know I was pretty excited to find this one in a Sally Ann shop.
This is one of my favourites. Anyone of my generation will recognize this photo immediately. The book is a biography of Kim Phuc, the girl seen in the centre of the photo, running from the burning village. The book is signed not only by the author, Denise Chong, but by the subject herself.
About three years ago, while going through a thrift store, I stumbled on a novel signed by Margaret Atwood. That was the start of a bit of an addiction. A rather compulsive collector, I became enamored with signed books. There is something very special about a book that has actually been in...
I'm a fan of both the TV series and the books. I always enjoyed the Capt Pellew character played by Robert Lindsay. I also felt that the character of Mr. Bush needed to be given a more significant part in the series in order to reflect his character's more prominent role in Forester's books.
Season finale of Fargo. Thank heavens it's been renewed for season 3. Wonderful example of the quality that could appear on television. Fortunately, I just picked up the DVD for season one, which I have yet to see.
This day, in 1939, saw the premiere of Gone with the Wind in Altanta...excitement all around, apparently. TCM has a newsreel about the event:

I've been doing a bit more research on St. Croix. The sole survivor was a stoker named William Fisher. He wrote an account of his experience in the Journal of Canadian Military History: http://scholars.wlu.ca/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1268&context=cmh
I had a bit of good fortune today at a local thrift store: a limited edition of Scottish poetry, signed by the compiler, John Buchan. Though not a great follower of Scottish verse, I was pretty surprised to find a book signed by Buchan! Author of The Thirty Nine Steps and numerous other...
Found this one on Saturday at a local house contents sale, together with a brown Stetson Whippet, a Biltmore Senator and a Dobbs stingy brim. At $5 a hat, who could resist! This is my 5th Borsalino and, at 7 1/4, it is one size too small so I'll probably just admire this one. It's spotless!

The Longest Day
The Cruel Sea (although based on a work of fiction, the book is commonly viewed as an account of Nicholas Monsarrat's experience as a RN officer in WWII.)
I thought it was the Aztecs! I watch this show once in a while but all I end up doing is shaking my head for an hour. That narrator has the most annoying voice on TV.
Besides being the birthday of some excellent fathers, it was on this day in 1911 that Roald Amundsen and his team of 4 others reached the South Pole...the first humans to do so.
On December 13th, 1937 the Japanese Army finally captured Nanking, China. What followed is well described in Iris Chang's 1997 book, The Rape of Nanking. It is not reading for the faint of heart.
Had a stroke of luck at a house contents sale yesterday. Scrounging around the basement I found this WWII vintage sailor's souvenir life ring. I was pretty excited. This sort of thing was usually given by a sailor to a girlfriend/wife/mother and expressed the pride he felt in his ship. In...
