That hallucinogenic bit is correct. The only time I ever tried it, I had this weird vision that I was on board an ocean liner surrounded by gents in fedoras and ladies in 1930s-40s dresses. It seemed so real, it was scary.
Here's mine. I think it probably came with a liner but lost it somewhere along the way.
Mine has the single row of stitching around the brim. I think the brim would be far too floppy without it. Brim width is 2-5/8"

I love that back treatment. I have a heck of a problem with jackets getting restrictive when I put my arms forward, even on jackets that otherwise fit fine. I'll have to see Joe next time he's in town, finances permitting.
Specifically, an evaporative or "Swamp Cooler." I've seen a few of those at car shows. They work well when the heat is high and the humidity is low, as it is in the southwest.
My situation is somewhat similar, Dad was born in 1906 and Mom was born in 1916 and I came along in 1961.

Driving home last night, I was on the 5 freeway north of Los Feliz, and the flames were coming very close to the edge of the freeway. The flames were also quite visible from the parking lot at work after the sun went down.
