Since it seems this is the part where people are "coming out" about their opinion of Mr. Nobel, and his Prize I'll say that I haven't had much respect for it since Yasser Arafat won it.
Most things our GI's brought back weren't family heirlooms, as I said before. I don't see the luger and Nazi flag my Great Uncle brought back from the war as a stolen item that belongs to some family in Germany [huh]. As for what was taken off of our boys, I don't consider losing your Army...
Oh yes, but the majority of swords brought home by our troops were modern, many stamped out by machines, not made by craftsmen. Even back then many of the Japanese Officer Corps were from peasant stock. It would be interesting to know just what percent of the Japanese Officer Corps, were...
Personally I wouldn't return them, unless I felt I had no entitlement to them. If I had killed a Japanese Officer and kept his sword, I'd probably keep it till I died. I wouldn't have a problem with my children giving it back though.
That said it seems that those who are giving stuff "back"...
I wouldn't.
As far as why he won't wear white tie who knows. I also understand that he snubbed the Norwegian king, which seems like a bad political move, if politics alone is the reason he is making his decisions at the ceremony.
Wow I envy you! I'd love to sit down and talk to him, especially considering he is is one of only 4 surviving WW1 vets alive. Combine that with the fact the he was also a prisoner of war of the Japanese during WW2 and I'm sure he has no short supply of stories.
I'd love to ask him what's it...
:offtopic: That's something you don't see here in the States anymore. I'm a tad jealous that the Top Hat see's some use across the pond, even if it is only in the ultra upper class lol.
I've put forth the view that wearing a suit for someone my age (I'm 24) is a sign of "rebellion" when worn as "everyday wear", in our casual culture. Personally I'd like to see the suit rise in popularity again, but it would have lots of obstacles to get over. The biggest being a lack of good...
In my very uneducated opinion :p , I think boaters have a connection with "olde tyme" now adays. Most people who see them today connect them with a barber shop quartet, political conventions, and riverboats.
With that said I think there are people who can pull off the look. Such as Depp when...
My cousin's grandmother (she's married to my first cousin both are in their late 50s) is 107 years old. She was a dairy farmer's wife in her life, and claims drinking lots of milk, and believing in God is the key to her longevity.
As far as people I'm directly related to that I "meet" it...
I agree. I don't know how well it would have worked out for the UK had he remained King in the long run. Then again the Japanese Emperor survived and visited America without much negative side affects for the nation, so maybe it wouldn't of been a big deal in the long run.
I'm not so sure of that, I thought he looked hurt when Betty tore him down and said she was leaving him, and how he ruined everything.
Plus we've already seen that he can't handle doing "whatever he wanted, with anyone, and avoid any consequences." his brother hanging himself has had a huge...
I wonder if the lack of good tailors, is just another reason for the decline in popularity of the suit. Us in the vintage crowd are unique since for most people the suit is a symbol of business, and "special occasion" not everyday wear.
Since politics is against the rules around here (sadly imo) I'll try to make this question as none political as I can. . I'm a big mystery fan, and in both Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes, and David Suchet's Poirot most people in the country have firearms. From the working class games keeper, to...
When it comes to vintage styles imho the difference between costume and "regular" clothing is the confidence of the wearer. If you act as you do every other day, and aren't visibly nervous all the time most people won't notice. You may feel a bit insecure at first in the same way some people...
