Is It Just Me? Chat! Collecting? Why?

My grandfather was born in the 1890s, and I remember going to his house when I was a small child in the 1970s. He had a lot of black antique furniture. I guess he just liked black a lot. I have a cool black floor lamp of his. He was a smart man, and had made 3 circular koi ponds in his back...

Found something interesting on a prospectin trip...

How utterly cool. Is the land for sale cheap? Perhaps the owner does not know that a house is there.

    Hair cuts

I have Wahl clippers, and I like them for the most part, except that with the guards, I want more gradations between a zero and a 1, and between a 1 and a 2. Anyone know of something that has finer gradations in the guards?

    Monocles.

Only a small band of brave men and women stands between the world as we know it and the unutterable evil of the Great Old Ones, whose minions plot the return and rule of their mighty lord, Great Cthulhu.

    Hair cuts

A monthly haircut sounds perfectly sensible to me. Personally, I like it very short on the sides and back (= "whitewalls," I guess) so I trim it once every 2 -3 weeks. I get too hot otherwise. But not everyone needs that.

    Hair cuts

Full agreement. A friend of mine is starting to recede and then he started getting this cut (a bit shorter on the sides, not much). Looks like a million bucks. After he trained the woman to cut it right.

    Handkerchiefs and Pocket Squares

I agree with Geesie. I just scored two sets of nice pocket squares. One, a vintage set through Ebay. Cheap, great designs. Another, a set of modern linen ones in somewhat art deco-esque designs from Thailand. I'll post pics at some point. I must say, these are far better than my previous...

    Those look rather handsome, Marc.

    What are you wearing today??

Mountain Man: looking great, and the trousers are indeed roomy! I have always wanted to visit Kandahar for the Asokan Buddhist inscriptions in ancient Greek: perhaps a Kabul-Kandahar trip?

Poll: Button or snaps on your suspenders?

Sewing a button is truly the easiest thing imaginable. It is as easy as tying shoes. Learning to read is much harder. If you can spell your name, you can sew a button. If I did not know how to sew a button, I certainly wouldn't admit it in front of anyone. You can learn how to...

Golden Era Movies Found at Big Lots/Discount Stores

Wow! I have the King Kong one with all the extra material and it came in a gorgeous metal box. $10 I think. Where I live, I do not believe there are stores called "Big Lots."

An article about early Christian writings describing the date of Jesus' Birth.

No records of Jesus exist from Roman non-christian sources from the period of his life. Non-christian sources mention a group of Christiani but these sources date from after Jesus' death. Philostratos describes a wandering magic-worker named Apollonius of Tyana who is very similar to Jesus.

    Exciting archaeological discoveries....

Some people take a position just to be able to write something. Journalists do this a lot. They have a deadline and they need to write something. So they toss something together just to have "copy" for their editor. And aside from journalists, when you think about the perversity of the...
