If you can bring yourself to do it, just beat on it! Wear it the rain. Jump in a river. Shove it in a back pack. Step on it a few times. (I'm not kidding. There was an "incident" that involved moonshine and me dancing and stomping on this hat.)
Here are a few pics of a well worn Campdraft. This is my camping hat, and while it's a bit misshapen the felt is in perfect shape. I could easily clean and reblock it back to being a proper dress hat. But I have other hats for that purpose.
Thanks Jimmer! You nailed it. And I went soft toe with vibram 700 half sole.
Congrats on your new Nomads also. Sounds like you have the whole family of smooth leathers now.
Your best source for White's is at www.bakershoe.com Give them a call and chat with Kyle. He is super friendly and knows everything that can be done with White's boots. They are highly customizable and I am sure you can get what you are after.
Here is a whole thread about the White's Semi...
I placed the order! And I took your advice to go for the close trim. I think it will be a good choice for those boots. Oh, and I agree that the full leather heel looks awesome! That's why I like half soles. I don't love the black strip of a full sole running through the heel.
I picked up one of the sweater's from Pete's friend also. As I understood Peter, those sweaters are his work that was being sold in the shop. He took them back when the shop closed, rather than his friend be stuck with the inventory.
I got a natural Jacob gansey. It's a cream color with...
Bakers had Cat's Paws awhile back. I have to ask if they still do. I am familiar with the Quabaug / cut down Vibram 700 sole. My semi-dress are done that way and I quite like it.
You are right about Marineabilly's blog... it's awesome!!!
I'd like to ask your opinion on some boots I'm considering.
I want to order some White's Nomads in black CXL, soft toe, brown edge treatment, double midsole and Vibram 700 1/2 half soles with a 1/4" heel lift. The Mister Freedom Road Champ is my inspiration.
A couple questions - my thought is...
That's damn good advice for anyone!
I'm very happy you are so pleased with your boots.
jimmer_5 those are some great looking Nomads! Do they have a celastic toe? It looks like have a soft toe, but the last time I looked White's would only make them with a celastic.
You are right the Chromexcel is softer. The strongest leathers are what Whites calls "smooth." They are a thick, oil tanned cow hide. It's the standard black/brown for their Smoke Jumpers. It also comes in a natural finish. They call it "distressed smooth." It's not artificially aged in...
