Wow! Those look great, in both Panama and Milan. Those brighter colors seem to work really nicely with a Dualist. I'd love to see headshots of those two.

My daughter and her friends wanted to wear fedoras for 8th grade graduation. I let her borrow one my works of Art, and now I can't get it back!

Thanks for that thread... so seems an early twentieth century sport... kinda really went with those tight suits and kravats...
I've seen Art's work but don't know if I have anything that would go with one...

Agreed! My daughter only tries mine on for fun, but boy does she make them look a lot better than they look on me. It's a mercy she hasn't taken over my collection.

Vintage Silhouette color questions

Hello all,

I've been lurking for a while. I thinking about ordering a hat from Art and like many am stuck on color. I'm planning for the hat to be casual and as flexible as possible in a 30's 40's look. Not Western but one that doesn't require a three piece suit to look right as I never wear suits. Guess I'm sorta going for a Indian Jones style of hat (by that I mean looks good darn near everywhere). I've noted many suggest a gray for a first hat. I like the look of silverbelly (although its appears more brown), granite for a darker gray, and dove is nice. Then I saw pecan and whiskey and am drawn to those as well. I'm thinking that I'll request a plain edge or welted edge since the bound edges look more formal to my eye.

I don't have any of Art's samples as of yet so this is sort of a first step in the process. For all the more knowledgable on the lounge what's your thoughts?

A medium gray with a black ribbon (no bigger than 1-3/4) is probably the most versatile color, I always felt.

I have found that pecan is a very versatile color. One of my most worn hats is my pecan VS with a slightly contrasting brown 3/4" ribbon. Goes with casual button up shirts and jeans fine.

Grey, Silverbelly, and Black Cherry are Art's most versatile colors, IMHO. The first two moreso than the latter, but BC is a dark horse (no pun) in the versatility category.

I might be wrong about this, but it seems to me that many of the European vintage hats I've seen are black. In the Classifieds right now, Blackthorne has a black VS up for sale, and it's a real beauty.

That's really your choice, but since you ask - for a first hat that's supposed to be as versatile as possible, I suggest one of the felt colors marked below with a dot or two dots (further narrowing it down to three).
In reading direction: Blue Smoke, Dove, Silverbelly, Dark Moss, Chocolate, Granite, Pecan.

Add the new dark black cherry (**) which isn't in the photo.

For the purpose you describe, I'd avoid colors that are too dark and sombre at the same time (like charcoal, black) as well as extremely light colors (like ivory, mojave) and also the more flamboyant colors (excluding in my opinion the dark black cherry). Anything that looks unobtrusive will be fine. On the other hand, you might see it differently and there is no need to justify this or that.

I agree with tropicalbob, black hats were fairly common back then, although that doesn't necessarily make black hats especially versatile. Hats simply were a necessity, after all.

Another member of the HoF arrived yesterday. I asked Art for a featherweight in Dove, a 5.5 inch open crown, 2.75 inch brim, unlined, and vented. I left the ribbon treatments to him. I'm very pleased.
