how to "flange" a fedora brim ?

I've had the same problem. In my case I laid a damp cloth on the brim and ironed it with a hot steam iron. Basically, I was steaming the brim and adding some pressure at the same time (i.e. the weight of the iron). I had laid the hat on several towels to avoid damaging the surface on which I...

Things That Never Seem to Change

HP Sauce and Worcestershire Sauce...both did their duty back in WW1.

Name your favorite films based on true stories.

Three off the top of my head: Breaker Morant (1980) Gallipoli (1981) The Railway Man (2013)

What are the Oldest Objects you Own?

That's probably because neither Rodney Dangerfield nor Milton Berle are members of this forum!

What was the last TV show you watched?

Murdoch Mysteries lost my interest last night so I ended up watching the new episode of X-Files. It was a throwback to one of their old monster stand-alone episodes and it was a pretty humorous take on the theme. I enjoyed it. Regardless, I doubt it will make me a regular viewer of the new...

Exciting signed books there, M. I've got a couple signed by Roberta Bondar but that's it for astronauts for me!

Sorry Mr C...Gretzky was too late for me. I lost interest in hockey after the first expansion. When I think of hockey, I still think in terms of the original 6...back when the Leafs actually won something once in a while! Makes me quite the dinosaur, I know, but there it is.

    What Are You Reading

I enjoy McMurtry's westerns but I do find most of them somewhat slow going. However, the stories are interesting and so is McMurtry's writing so I really don't mind. Sometimes, I find with McMurtry that it's the journey that's interesting, not the destination. Telegraph Days is a case in...

Deeper by Jeff Long. It's the sequel to the rather chilling Descent which I quite enjoyed. Hope this one is as good.

Another interesting one today at a different thrift store. It has no dust cover but it is interesting: a 1934 first edition of Ellery Queen's The Chinese Orange Mystery.

Repairing A Hole In A Felt Fur Hat

I recently fixed a split in the crown of my old beater Whippet. I used a mixture of shaved felt (from inside the hat) with white glue. I put this on the inside (don't overdo it) to stabilize the split. Then I carefully applied some white glue to the split from the outside and let it all dry...

    What Are You Reading

Re-reading H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds, as I do occasionally. Hard to believe it was first published in 1898.

What was the last TV show you watched?

I always found the earlier seasons of X-Files the best, before the writers became obsessed with conspiracies and the abduction of Mulder's sister. I always enjoyed the cigarette smoking man as well...love a good villain. (But then I always enjoy the Swede character (Gunderson) in Hell on...

What was the last TV show you watched?

Tried it. Not too keen on it. Really tired of the Mulder-Scully bickering. However I did watch a few old episodes on Space Channel in the afternoon. I still found those enjoyable (as long as they stayed away from the Mulder's sister theme!).

What was the last TV show you watched?

There's a few shocking episodes in Hell of Wheels...they're not adverse to killing off main characters.

Cruising through a local Sally Ann today I noticed they had a pile of old paperback editions of Ripley's Believe it or Not from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Then I spotted this gem...the 1944 Pocket Books edition of the 1929 Ripley's Believe It or Not. Most of it is in print form of course, but...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

Kind of calls into question the validity of that particular website. The tag around the cat's neck clearly reads: "HMS Amethyst April 1949". That would be Simon. It doesn't look like the reverse of the Dickin Medal but it may be. The medal had details, and the name of the animal, on the...

Sam's story is interesting....but that photo is Simon the cat from HMS Amethyst. Note the tag on his neck.

    Today in History

You're probably thinking of Zulu, narrated by Sir Richard Burton. It had a great version of Men of Harlech as well.
