i just posted this over in the thrift store finds thread but I figured I'd post it here too.
Made an exciting find today in a local thrift store. It was a signed first edition of Private Army by Vladimir Peniakoff, better known as 'Popski'. It is his memoir of service in the 1st Demolition...
I've found some terrific stuff at thrift stores over the years and today's find has to rank as one of the most interesting. Poking through the single shelf of old 'vintage' books I came across a first edition hardcover of a book I had originally read as a teenager..."Private Army" by Vladimir...
I’ve always enjoyed the scene in which they capture Pegasus Bridge. I find it interesting that Richard Todd, who played Major Howard, was actually present at that action as a member of the British paratroops that reinforced Howard’s glider force at the bridge.
“Up the Oxs and Bucks!”
What a difficult task! Here's some films that I wouldn't alter:
Gallipoli (1981)
Breaker Morant (1980)
Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
Seven Samurai (1954)
The Cruel Sea (1953)
Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)
Battle of Algiers (1966)
Apocalypse Now (1979)

You certainly know you're getting old when you overhear a young woman in a rummage sale holding up a CD and asking her friend: "Have you ever heard of Frank Sinatra?"
Or another young woman in a thrift store holding up a DVD and exclaiming: "Who's Shirley Temple? Is that a girl's name?"...

Although scarf season seems to be winding down here, I came across an interesting Tootal scarf today at a contents sale.
I've never seen this label before...
Just finished Michael Harris' Party of One about our last Prime Minister. Excellent book but very hard on my blood pressure. Can't say anything more without straying into the range of politics.
May 4th, 1910: the Naval Service of Canada was created. It became the Royal Canadian Navy in 1911.
And in 1970, an event I certainly remember well...Ohio National Guardsmen opened fire on student protesters at Kent State University, killing 4 and wounding 9.
I saw Easy Rider back in 1970. It was, of course, the coolest...then. Saw it again a few years ago. I don't think it aged very well...or perhaps I didn't age very well. Something certainly didn't.
Today is ANZAC day in Australia and New Zealand. It originally commemorated the landing at Gallipoli in 1915 but I believe it has become the national day of mourning for all their war dead. Out of respect, memorial events are being held in 8 major Canadian cities as well.
I dug out some dusty volumes on the Zulu War that I haven’t looked at in years. You might want to have a look at Robert Edgerton’s Like Lions They Fought...a very good history of the war. He quotes a letter from General Sir Henry Ponsonby in which he calls Chard “a dull, heavy man who seemed...
