100% Beaver felts from Pure Beaver Supply. This is the second time it has happened, both times same felt and color. The first one I did experiment on making it a Distressed hat. Actually turned out nice and is now my favorite everyday hat.

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

Need some help. I'm getting a molting effect on the brim. Assuming I pounced it too much and the shellac is showing through. This has happened several times now, but only on light colors. It doesn't seem like I'm pouncing that much, but maybe it only needs a little. Is there a way to remove the...

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

I started over a year ago. Purchased some blocks from several companies including Hat Blocks Australia (http://www.hatblocksaustralia.com.au/open-crowns), currently my favorite place to order from. Nice people and very helpful. The blocks are (IMO) the best, although I have not purchased from...

Now that the time has changed and it's getting darker earlier, started making hats again. Finished these two and have two more in the works.

Pouncing question. Do you pounce the “Full pounce finish” felts? Wondering if I’m over doing it causing the molting look on the brims.

Making a Western hat by hand?

Just finished this hat last week. Nutri, from Sunrise Hats. I like working with them and have not had any issues. This was the 160g weight. I like the thickness for fedoras.

Making a Western hat by hand?

Welcome. appreciate the communication. I'm in the same boat as you. Started Hatting about a year ago and struggling to find felt. Pure Beaver does have a few in very limited colors. I had the same response from Winchester and have sent several emails to Fepsa with no response. I do like the...

The owner, Gus, is 92. Not doing too good. Been trying to get him to teach more for about a year.

Noticed the same. PBHS has been steadily increasing the prices (now $495). I'm sure it's because everyone else is. I've only been doing this for about a year, but the selection on the market has dramatically decreased in the past 9 months. Local hat shop (Batesakes, since 1917) says he is...

Thanks for the feedback. I was more concern about the crown holding the crease than the brim. I'll give it a try with what I have and see how they turn out.

Fedora Question – What weight felt is best for a fedora? I have 95g, which seems very flimsy and I have a 120g which is better. The 160g may almost be too much. Do they hold the shape or do you need more shellac to them?

Anybody use a Laser to etch the Hat Band or do illustrations on the Brim? Been researching the lasers and they seem very capable.

It works good to trim it down, but the sander is awesome.

Yes, but since I suck at cutting, I just get close and use a vertical sander to get bring it down to the line. Goes much easier. Sander is outside do to the dust.

I'll have to check out the gravity steam iron. Here's the workshop. I just started this journey about a year ago.
