Has anyone checked out the Berroco yarn website for free patterns? They have a erally nice selection. I'm thinking of knitting this cardigan from a free pattern. I think it has a nice vintage look to it. What do you think?

    Cleaning linens/doilies

Thanks for the advice, ladies. I've used oxyclean on linens before, but never on items with crocheting, embroidery, etc. on them. I'll have to give it a go tonight and take some before and after pictures.

    Cleaning linens/doilies

Good linen is naturally stiff. It will soften over time with use and washing. Linen is very strong, so unless they have any delicate stitching on them, I'd just put them in the wash, then hang to dry. Don't put them in the dryer, linen will shrink.

I think this is the best route. Also, if the dress is rayon crepe (which it looks like it may be) be careful how wet you get the fabric when you spot clean it. Water will make rayon crepe shrink up. If you're wearing a rayon crepe dress and you get caught in a rainstorm, the dress will shrink...

Some old buttons will melt as well. I had a 1940s blouse with clear plastic buttons dry-cleaned and the buttons melted.

    Cleaning linens/doilies

My aunt gave me a garbage bag full of pillowcases, table runners, dresser sets, doilies, etc. that look to be from the 1930s and 1940s. The pillow cases have crocheted doily-style trims on them and look to never have been used. They are lovely, but they were stored in a cedar chest and have...

    Loungers' Pets

Gertie and Molly would like me to inform you that cats rule and all dogs are suckas. Here's a picture of Gertie in her natural habitat, foraging for food. Notice the kitteh fangs, perfect for tearing apart an unsuspecting wild potato chip. And here is Molly defending her den and fellow...

    What are you wearing today??

I must agree, it lends NickD an air of eccentric mystery. I think it works because he's always so impecably groomed and dressed. Keep up the good work! :eusa_clap

ladies:GREAT 1942 film for clothes, hairdos, hats

My husband noticed that gown as well. lol Rita also wore some lovely nude illusion negligees in You Were Never Lovlier. That seemed to be a theme throughout her wardrobe in the movie. The clothing that Rita wears in You'll Never Get Rich (the other movie she did with Astaire) is also...

ladies:GREAT 1942 film for clothes, hairdos, hats

Do you mean this dress? It's lovely. I was trying to figure out if rita had any foundation garments on underneath the dress, because it looks so "nude." I love how suggestive the gown is without actually revealing anything. Another Rita Hayworth movie with amazing clothing is Cover...

My apologies for taking so long to respond. I've been doing some construction on my house in the evenings and I kept forgetting because I've been so preoccupied. The black 40s shoes have a 2" heel. Thanks for looking!

    Vintage Sunglasses

To go even farther back, colored lenses such as green were used to treat different varieties of the pox (mostly VDs like syphilis) in the 18th century. You would not have worn colored lenses unless you had a medical reason to. Personally, I prefer green lenses. I find them to be much easier...

Show us the food dishes you've prepared.

Most of the recipes came from Hannah Glasse's The Art of Cookery, published in 1747. My favorite has to be the carrot puffs. You boil carrots, mash them up, make a dough similar to a fritter and fry them up. Delish.

Oh, the Stigma of an Astigmatism. . .

I second Miss Sis. I've learned to stick with vintage metal-framed glasses through trial and error. I once had a plastic tortoise shell pair of glasses break and fall off of my head without even touching them. :eusa_doh:

    Depression Glass.

Vermont Country Store had a file for grinding down the sharp edges of chipped glassware, but I don't know if they still sell it or not.
