    Edumication

I'm definitely in the wrong lounge... high school dropout (well, kicked out, really) ... followed by engineering school dropout ... followed by law school dropout - hey but I did get IN to engineering school and law school. Got a doctorate from the university of hard knocks along the way.

Thank you all for being here

You guys aren't alone. Ive been smoking for 30+ years. During that time, it's mostly been cigars - average two a month! I did go through a pipe-smoking stage where I smoked at least a bowl a night, but it only lasted for a year or so and I went back to the 2 per month cigar habit. Oh, and I...

Experienced my first earthquake this morning...

My first too - woke up to a weird rumbling sound and the glass doors on the fireplace in the bedroom were rattling. At first I thought it was the train (the tracks are about a quarter mile away) but the train isn't that loud and never caused the doors to rattle. I thought it might be a...

Agree. I admit that's not what I was thinking about at the time, but definitely a concern where I plan on wearing mine. Best, Staggerwing

A Safari Jacket Potpourri.....lots of pics

Looks like a good place to jump back in! It's been over a year since I last posted on this site - too busy with work. This thread looked like a great place to jump back into the fray. I recently ordered the Walkabout Safari & Photographer Jacket from http://www.walkabout.com. Not Golden Era...

How to Win Friends and Influence People

I read it in 1979, not 1939 and perhaps the material was obvious to most folks, but it wasn't obvious to me. Before reading this book and putting the material into practice, I often wondered why I wasn't "well liked" (heck, I thought I was a pretty swell guy!). Maybe those who came from...

    Typewriter ribbons.

Luke: I'm not aware of any way to add ink to the ribbon, although someone here might have some advice. I am unfortunately old enough to have used these and back then you just replaced the ribbon when type started to get light. The old manual typewriters are truely mechanical marvels.

How to Win Friends and Influence People

I read it many years ago. I was a new supervisor with a handful of employees in a huge corporation. It wasn't going well and the consensus between my employees and my boss was that the problem was...me. It turned the entire situation around. From almost getting fired, I spent 15 years there...

    Smoking in the house???

Outside on the patio for me. Really cuts down on smoking in the winter. I've got a propane heater which keeps me warm enough down to about 35 - 40 degrees (F) assuming it's not windy, but this has been an unusually cold winter for the DC area. In the next few years, I'm going to build a...

    I Hate Hats II

True Story Back in the late 70, my friend, I'll call him Don, and I used to frequent a little bar in a rural VA town. Unfortunately, the establishment closed down due to the original owner's inability to stop drinking up the profits. We were greatly dissappointed. One day, we learned our...

    Aviator's Footwear Advice Needed

Lone Ranger: That makes sense. And, I even have a well-worn pair! I don't think I ever flew an airplane wearing them but I may have. Great idea and that helps alot.

    Aviator's Footwear Advice Needed

Anybody out there know what a civilian aviator wore on his feet in the 1930s? Anything special? I suppose it would depend somewhat on thew type of aircraft - warm boots in an open cockpit in the winter or street shoes in an enclosed cabin? Your help will be greatly appreciated.

The Soda Thread: Coke not Classic; Throwback Pepsi

Every day, when I wake up, I thank the Coca-Cola company for introducing new Coke. They broke my 12 bottle a day addiction! Used to be, first thing in the morning, I'd drink a Coke. When I went to bed at night, I'd lay there drinking one, and I always had another on the nightstand in case I...

    WWII Combat Injuries

Not sure about hearing, but loss of eyesight in one eye would not necessarily keep you from civilian flying. The FAA issues what's called a "waiver of demonstrated ability." That is, if you can show that the handicap doesn't prevent you from operating the aircraft safely, you may be granted a...

    Smoking Back in the Day

I smoke because I enjoy it. I don't need to defend it. As for smoking in semi-public places (bars, restaurants, etc.) it should be up to the owner. What get you more business? Maybe some owners will opt for non smoking establishments. Maybe not. It's their business. You have no more right...
