I recently acquired this Stetson 100 and while the felt and construction were fantastic it was still a rather "Blah" looking fedora. So I took it over to Mike Miller at Northwest hats and had a different ribbon and matching edge binding put on it. I also had him reblock it as it had some taper...
No Kidding, this one just sold for over $600. Amazing!!! I know beauty and value are all relative, but seriously the Whippets were $10.00 hats. There's nothing special about the felt or construction at all. The Stetson 100s don't even bring that much and their felt really is amazing. There...
That was a very good purchase. You got a great hat in what appears to be excellent condition. That era of borsalino's were fantastic. The vintage ones have fantastic felt and are put together with a lot of skill. A word of warning though, just don't think that a new borsalino will be of the...
Seabass. I have a knox like that, almost identical to your Whippet. Very heavy brim curl. I couldn't get it lay down even after steaming and ironing it. I wonder if the bound edge helps to keep the curl in. I've been thinking of taking it off and trying it again and see if it makes a...
I found it's hard to limit myself to only having a few options to choose from. It's easier to have a few of every basic color then no matter what you wear you will have a hat that matches. Trying to keep your hat stable to only 2 or 3 may end up being a bit limiting. I'd suggest getting what...
Wow, I can't believe I started this thread almost 9 years ago! In the mean time I've bought 3 black fedora's. A vintage Borsalino, a Stetson Open Road and a custom one from Adventurebilt. I do wear them but not as much as my other ones. But I definitely would not want to be without them...
I have a Stetson 25 in excellent condition and the felt on the Stetson Beaver 100 is definitely a higher grade. I took both hats over to Mike Miller at Northwest Hats and had him close his eyes and feel the felt on each one and see if he could pick out the 100. He did it in a matter of seconds...
Sorry, I wasn't specific enough about the sweatband. Mine is exactly like yours "Stetson 100 Beaver" but on the other one I had it also said Stetson 100 by the circular logo. Minor change I suppose but they used to put it on the liner as well and I just noticed the difference.

Here they are. I've had another Stetson 100 and it was older. The felt seemed to be the same quality but I noticed they didn't bother putting the "Stetson 100" logo on either the sweatband or the liner on this one. I love the felt though super smooth and very dense, probably twice the weight...
This one had a cowboy type pinch. I popped it out and cleaned it with some scout foam cleaner. The crown took the reshaping well without any real hint of the previous pinch. It has also made it less stiff. Here's a pic. The inside is identical to the pics in the previous post. The hat is...
Reviving this thread as I just found a Stetson 100 with the exact same labeling as this one. It came with a Stetson hat box. I too noticed how stiff it is. But the felt is super tight and in great shape. Found it in an Antique shop here locally. Have you made any effort to soften yours...
That definitely should not happen whether you are rubbing it back and forth or not. I've cleaned dozens of hats and have 9 vintage borsalinos and have "rubbed" the heck out of them to clean them and no felt fiber have come off like that. Don't know if that's the norm with all new borsalino's...
Vintage Borsalino
vintage Borsalino found at the Portland Expo. Nothing super fancy but it sports that great thin and tight vintage borsalino felt. The inside was in great shape, but it was super wrinkled and dirty but Mike Miller of Northwest hats cleaned it up, took out the wrinkles and I...
