I know very little about uniforms, but isn't the badge on his hat a marine corp insignia?

People who found love on line (telegraph line)

Great point. Telephone operators, unlike telegraph, were mostly women. I wonder how many women got married due to men they met while working. Mad Men has some scenes where the telephone gals listen in on the Italian guy.

How do you finance your vintage or vintage style clothing and hats?

Do you ever get into houses that have vintage laying around. the home inspector I work with often gets stuff free. he just says, if you don't want that once you buy the house, let me know. I went into the house of a recently deceased hoarder. Sad how he lived in teh laast years. he was...

Gabardine is a weave not a fiber: The fabric and fiber content terminology thread

I don't always notice a rayon smell, but I do know that distinct smell you get from 30s rayon crepe. I have had a few lounge jackets, and recently a dress i sold. very distinct smell I am convinced is from the fabric itself. Not offensive, slightly, but not too chemically, rather woody i...

    Pencil Mustache

Not me, I used to pluck and use mascara. On the other hand, I didn't need to always use mascara. I had a thick enough stash that when plucked, it looked quite nice as is. but for special nights, a little mascara never hurt.

Not so. Then why do they have the time police?

Whatever you do, don't get romantically involved with your grandmother, shoot your grandfather, and for gods sake, don't try to kill Adolph Hitler.

    Spectator Shoes

I got a redone pair at Nordstrom rack. I like em, but don't love em. White leather I hate, and the style is not my favorite. Kind of 20s 30s i guess. I might sell them and get the remix. those I love.

"Time Traveler" in 1941: "modern" dress in old photos?

Looking closer, the lines on the M seem to be rough indicating a knit, and the neck of the sweater seems kind of oval across the shoulders, again, indicating vintage. But my guess is an LA hipster somehow got caught in a time warp with Forgotten Man, and they somehow switched time periods...

"Time Traveler" in 1941: "modern" dress in old photos?

His top does not look so much like a printed shirt as a knit school sweater, with the contrasting colors being knit in. The jacket is unusual. If it were 50s I would guess it was a synthetic fake fur jacket, not too unusual for the time. being 1941, not so sure. But I don't see anything...

How do you finance your vintage or vintage style clothing and hats?

I recently saw a lounger mention he financed the clothing with the money he got from playing music. When I lived in SF, before dealing full time, I would work to pay the bills, and only buy clothing with money that came from buying and selling vintage. I did this just to curb the habit and...

    Show off the sports coats.

Well, not cheap, but worth every penny. You already have the most expensive part, You might consider having slacks and a vest maybe made in the same fabric. This would be the time while he can still get the matching fabric.

Favorite Vintage stuff that just hangs around.

I love reading old copies too. I would rather know what China, or Argentina or whatever, was like in the 50s than now.

People who found love on line (telegraph line)

recently I was put in mind of a piece I heard on the radio with a woman who wrote a book on the telegraph in the 1800s. How it changed life for west coast business men, etc. But she also mentioned that the operators had a lot of down time, and would chat with each other. often they became...

Finding love on line (telegraph) vintage style.

I see that the bartenders closed another thread on on line romance. Which I have no feelings about either way, but I was put in mind of a piece I heard on the radio with a woman who wrote a book on the telegraph in the 1800s. How it changed life for west coast business men, etc. But she...

    Current fashion

Fair enough. Interestingly, you mention something that wasalso part of my thoughts. My thinking is that while I don't know this guy, the fashion world has become much like the art world. It is more about being outrageous, creating things with little connection to aesthetically pleasing, and...
