Romanian Fashions in the mid-20th Century

I can only base my observations on my personal experience... the tailors that I used lamented the loss of foot traffic, people no longer wanted the hassle and expense of dealing with a tailor, much easier to do down to the flashy western-style malls that popped up in the early naughties and pick...

Romanian Fashions in the mid-20th Century

Good catch on the Iron Guard symbol and salute - I hadn't seen them. Dreadful bunch of people, good riddance. Haven't a clue as to what those girls' uniforms represent... might be stewardesses for LARES (precursor to TAROM, the national air carrier)? Not sure.

Romanian Fashions in the mid-20th Century

Oh - re. the Iron Guard, I somewhat doubt you would see many people posing for photographs in that movement's getup. They were more active during the period prior to WWII. By 1941 they were kaput for all intents and purposes. A thoroughly unsavoury bunch.

Romanian Fashions in the mid-20th Century

Nice compilation of these photos. This photographer plied his trade primarily in "the sticks"; Ialomița is pretty far from the capital, București. These pictures are a wonderful visual record of what people were wearing back in the late '30s - '50s. A lot of the pics with uniforms appear to...

    Romania between the wars

Very interesting, was unaware that the Daily Mail posted that (not that I'm an avid reader). As someone with ties to Romania I found it very interesting.

Golden Era inspired hockey goalie mask

Very cool... that is the first mask I've seen that references the Golden Era. I guess it would be a bit much to take to the ice wearing a fedora, so that is the next best thing. ;-) I'm a goalie myself - just started playing again in a league over here in the UK, after a break of nearly 20...

    "It isn't a @*$%> cowboy hat"

Wow - I can't believe that this thread is still going strong! I still get the odd cowboy comment, which always leaves me puzzled. FFS, it isn't a cowboy hat!

    Burberry Prorsum?

Popped into the Burberry shop in the local outer, and saw some interesting suits hidden in the back, away from the chavy stuff that seems to draw the crowds. They were from Burberry's Prorsum range, and cut from a heavier, coarser cloth than what one normally finds on offer. Actually quite...

Going to the doctor in the "Golden Era"?

Fascinating, how things change! Thanks for the information. Re. the ten-day stay in the hospital, I imagine back then that there wasn't such a rush to get the mother and child out the door? We recently had a child back in April, and my wife was sent home after 3 days... and that was...

Going to the doctor in the "Golden Era"?

Interesting... thanks for that reply. Based on some of that info I was able to look up Blue Cross/Blue Shield on the aul Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Cross_Blue_Shield_Association It has been around for quite some time! I wonder what people w/o said insurance did when they...

Going to the doctor in the "Golden Era"?

I should've been a bit more specific - my experience wasn't exactly Golden Era, although my childhood GP certainly was! I was a little kid in the '70s and a teenager in the '80s.

Going to the doctor in the "Golden Era"?

This might sound like a daft question, but how was something as simple as scheduling a doctor's appointment done? Was there an equivalent to the health insurance that most people have/don't have nowadays, or did you just pay whatever the doctor's fees were? What about paying for operations...

    Wested?

I've posted about Wested before; I recommend their Indy jacket in goatskin. It is lightweight, tough and looks good. If you're in the UK and have the opportunity to pop in to their facility and have a chat with Peter it is worth it.

    New Newsletter

I haven't been frequenting the FL as much as I had previously due to various real-world commitments, so it was very nice to receive the FL newsletter. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Keep up the good work!

"I want to feel like a new man"

Good points... I think that this happens to some people when they try to affect a major change in their lifestyle. Self doubt does many a person in. Like you said, you need to impress yourself.

"I want to feel like a new man"

Apologies if this has been posted previously, but I stumbled upon this article in today's Guardian and found it to be an interesting read.

    Upstairs, Downstairs anyone?

No, not the one from the '70s (?), but rather the updated one now showing on the Beeb. Anyone happen to see it? Some lovely '30s interior shots. I don't know how accurate the clothing is - some of the suits look nice - but the few hats I have seen so far aren't so hot.

    Holdall and wash bag

Picked up a nice wash bag and holdall from Marks and Sparks yesterday. Good deal on the price as well, thanks to the post-Christmas sale. I really needed a proper overnight/carry-on, and this holdall fits the bill nicely. No extraneous pockets, flaps or other nonsense. The wash-bag is also...
