Two new CD sets I just got today from Amazon.
"30 #1 Hits of the '30s" (2 CD set)
and
"Big Band Magic - The Sound of the Fabulous Forties"
48 of the Greatest Hits (2 CD set)
They're totally awesome! All original artist recordings.
I am turning into a little old lady!
My son was fortunate that his recruiter used to be a TI (Training Instructor) at Lackland. Actually, he's the one that came up with the physical fitness program that's posted on the Air Force website. His recruiter filled him in before he left for basic about all the neat little "tricks" that...
Another Airman update
Thanks, nubsnubs. My son has always admired the Air Force and its traditions.
He sent me a brief email yesterday saying he completed his Warrior Week. He didn't particularly care for the gas chamber but really liked the obstacle course and he got expert Marksman. He'll...
Airman update
Big Man and others, here's an update on my son.
I've spoken with him on the phone several times and he sounds real positive. Its challenging to say the least, but he likes what he's doing. He should be completing his "Warrior Week" today. That's where they go out in the...
Men, in general, don't notice all the little "flaws" that we women do. I've got stretch marks AND I have vitiligo (its kind of a devasting disease in that my body attacks the pigment cells in my skin and now I've got various white patches and assorted pigmented patches all over my body. Its...
Hairstyling tip!
I've been trying to find a way to get that pin curl look without having to go full out with pin curls. I think I may have found a way. I curl my hair with Hot Sticks, but take them out slightly before they've cooled. I take the Hot Stick curl and gently let it lay flat like a...
kamikat,
I have several pairs of original stockings from the 30s and 40s and they're in all different shades of beige and a couple pairs in black. So I think whatever color you prefer would be right. Every manufacturer had their own "color scheme" because one pair that is called "beige" might...
If your hair takes a curl easy, don't let the sticks get too hot to start with. I usually plug mine in when I start to put on my make-up. (I rarely let the sticks heat hot enough for the "ready dot" to come on.) Also, the hot part on the stick is right in the middle, so try to avoid holding it...
Well, I'm no expert by any means, but I'd say the coat is probably mid to late 30s and possibly early 40s. The Persian lamb (or Persian wool as they are known around here) coats were quite popular then.
Vanity ideas
Here's another link to a thread in the Display Case about vanities.

Scroll down the page and you'll see what's on my vanity.
I have the 1930s era book and love it also.
Just remember that the Sears catalog back then had fashions that were a wee bit behind the current fashion scene. I imagine it was because they had to take the time to print up and distribute the catalogs way in advance.
The books are excellent...
Definitely a treasure!
Lady Day,
You really did get quite a bargain. $3 a piece for those is almost unheard of.
A bit of history on your patterns. The ones that say, "Delineator Style" are patterns that readers of the Delineator Magazine could purchase that were featured in their issues...
Well, I'm going to somewhat agree and disagree.
True, the stretchy stockings that are sold at Wal-Mart will move around, but like the other gals have said, the FF seamed ones usually will not.
But I have worn a girdle and since I have extremely sensitive skin, the girdle I have irritates me...
Thanks, LD, for the picture.
I guess they really are where they should be on my legs after looking at the pictures. Mine even have a cotton top and foot. They look very similar to the ones on the far left, except the ribbing is horizontal rather than vertical.
Very interesting ad.
Thanks, Kitty, for the clarification of terms. The "welt" is 6 inches tall, but it doesn't start until just above my knee and then it goes about mid-thigh on me. I think its because I'm just not used to seeing the welt that low that made me wonder if it was too short. But then, these are vintage...
Needing some "expertise" information re: vintage stockings
I've been debating whether or not to put up on the Bay some vintage seamed stockings I bought a while back. I thought they were too short for my legs, but I tried a pair on again today and noticed that they have a very wide band at the...
You can get some ideas here...
wedding belle,
While I don't know the specific type of hairdo you want, I just found this website and thought it might be helpful to you.

Lots of ideas in there.
comfortable vintage-styled shoes
I have all three colors of these and they are extremely comfortable. (I think they're having a 40% sale--click on the homepage to see it.) I can wear them all day with ease. I just wish they came in more colors. Since I wear them a lot, they've gotten scuffed up...
