I just finished Walter Mosley's novel, Devil in a Blue Dress, a murder mystery set in 1948 Los Angeles. I had heard favorable reviews of the Easy Rawlins mysteries, so I had this one on my list.
The whodunnit element is good, but the colorful—no pun intended—cast of characters...
I would say it's not only okay, it's realistic.
In the 1980s before they passed away, my grandparents had on their desk office supplies from the 1920s or so. A dip pen made in the 1950s still worked, why buy a new one? Great-grandma's paper weight from the 1920s still worked, why buy a new...
Monty Python Go-Withs
I nominate Terry Gilliam's animated shorts to be added to the list. He created the bumpers between Monty Python sketches.
There's a story about his animations at http://www.digitalmediafx.com/Features/terry-gilliam.html
Just one more, I promise...
I know I'm starting to dominate this thread, so just one more and I'll shut up.
Again, not WWII-specific, but humor is part of the aloha spirit. Don't take my word for it, just browse around the shops. This first one is on a block in Honolulu with some wonderful...
I haven't seen the Utah; it's on my agenda for next time.
My first time to Pearl, I had been reading books in the ship's library about December 7, so it was all fresh in my mind. As the ship entered the harbor and proceeded to the pier, the entire experience was one of the most moving in my...
The visitor center has computers set up that you can use to query the database of the "residents." They also have lists of the most popular, including Ernie Pyle and Ellison Onizuka.
Oh, great!
You just had to go and tell me about all this great stuff in the next issue, didn't you?
Now I'm going to be camped out by the mailbox until it gets here, and I won't get anything done.
Thanks alot! :rage:
;)
It may not have any WWII connection, but while you have the car, take a drive over the Pali Highway. The scenery is breathtaking. (It's the only place I can recall seeing a double rainbow.)
I figured out the truth about Bozo when he reached out and his wristwatch showed. It was a real, grown-up wristwatch with a Speidel Twist-O-Flex watchband. I knew the real Bozo wouldn't wear a wristwatch with a Twist-O-Flex. Then all the pieces began to fall together--Santa, the Easter Bunny...
Do Small Taildraggers Count?
My grandfather took me up in a Piper Cub. We took off and landed from a dirt strip on a cattle ranch. It wasn't a vintage airplane at the time, if it even qualifies as that today. It's a very fun plane with excellent visibility, front, sides, and top.
I've heard...
What am I wearing today?
With temperatures in the 90s and a house not built for it? As little as possible.
I'm not posting a photo.
Hope you don't mind.
(Thought you wouldn't.)
On-Topic: Vintage Electronics
I have a little different take on the communication problems at fast food drive-throughs. Of course, I've had my difficulties with non-native speakers, as well as intellectually-challenged native speakers. But that's not my favorite rant.
There's much to like...
I remember hearing quantities of $1000 referred to as "Gs" in the old movies and TV shows, being short for the aforementioned "Grand".
I've also heard dollars referred to as "skins" or "frog hides".
Just finished Rumpole and the Reign of Terror by John Mortimer. A refreshing look at current events by way of an Old Bailey hack.
I love the Rumpole books, the characters, and the TV series. I got started on the TV show because Leo McKern was one of my favorite actors. I've since read all the...
