Star Trek
As I reported in the thread on this subject, I just saw an early screening of the new Star Trek movie. Ordinarily, I don't repeat myself in multiple threads, but I liked it enough that I'm going to see it at least once more. That will be one for the post in the New Star Trek thread...
Just Saw It
I just saw a preview screening that ended only minutes ago.
This one's going to be a blockbuster. It has the connection to the original series for us Trekkers, but it stands on its own merits. Snappy pace, beautiful design, charming cast.
I'm ready to see it again.
We just saw Knowing last night. Nicholas Cage is an MIT astrophysics professor who decodes predictions left by a strange little girl in a time capsule in 1959.
Very spooky film with many tense moments, but we enjoyed it.
Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak.
It's slow starting, with many characters introduced at the beginning. I'm hanging in there, though. I'm curious to find out what could bring so many characters together. Got to be something revolutionary.
This past week:
Bolt
From what I've seen in reviews and box office results, I wasn't expecting much, but I really enjoyed it.
Igor
An okay movie, but there's something not quite right that I can't put my finger on. Maybe that it moves along step by step, without any surprises or...
Mancini is often haunting, but not always sad. One of my favorite Mancini scores is from another of my favorite films, Silver Streak (1976). When I listen to the dreamy main theme on the soundtrack album, I can see a passenger train chooglin' across wide open spaces, and I want to get on board.
Soldier in the Rain is easily one of my top 5 favorite films. I searched for years before I found both the book and the DVD. The movie ending is very different, but overall close to the book. I pull out the DVD from time to time to get my Gleason+McQueen fix.
And another Steve McQueen...
You know, I'd like to have a collection of the old educational films I saw at school. Certainly the glossy ones, from Bell Labs I think it was, such as Hemo the Magnificent and Our Mister Sun. But also the shorter, Coronet films and the like.
From TV, I used to enjoy Sky King and Rescue 8...
I think John called it right with the CLR suggestion.
I'm more finicky about my tea and coffee apparatus than a surgeon about his scalpel. I used to live in Southern California where the water is extremely hard and mineral deposits build up on the coffee and tea things. That's where I...
I just watched Citizen Kane on TCM's salute to RKO tonight. Fascinating character study. I'd seen it in pieces, but never straight through from the beginning.
Also in this past week:
TCM followed up a documentary on gangster films with a showing of The Public Enemy. I always enjoy a James...
I went to storage and either that disc is in a box I couldn't get to or I sold that disc when I got the DVD.
So I tried looking for specs on the laser disc and ran across this little tidbit at
http://www.combustiblecelluloid.com/mrhulot.shtml:
"I rented the Criterion laserdisc of Mr...
I saw Mamma Mia last week. A lot of fun but, whoa, Pierce Brosnan cannot sing!
This week I saw Tropic Thunder. From the various discussion threads I've read, there's no middle ground; you love it or you hate it. I loved it. The premise, the characters, the blend of action, comedy, satire, and...
Now that you mention it, I remember the folding chair scene, too. I first saw that film in the theater, too.
I have the Criterion DVD; it's 87 minutes, right? I have the Criterion laser disc in storage. I'll check it next time I'm over there.
