Here's a new one I just received - a spinner for removing lacquer. These are hard to find, and this is a different maker & design than the other one I own.
Edit - Can't find anything on the manufacturer. Anyone heard of them? I think my other one is a Cummins.
You bet! That hat is actually a complete ground up rebuild of an old Hasidic hat purchased from a seller in Israel. It was thoroughly washed, re-blocked in your size and oval, new sweatband installed, brim trim, and hatband. It had an old price tag for $4.99. I'm very glad you like it!
Thank you RBH.
I have really struggled with whether I should respond at all, and whether any response other than a very sincere "thank you" should be made. I have reluctantly decided to do both.
I need to thank you because I truly appreciate the kind words and believe them to be sincere...
Daniele,
I have one email Friday, which is a repeat. I answered this a week or two ago., I believe, but have re-answered. Also, please see my two emaiI messages of September 2, 2015.
Nutshell:
I'll contact you when you are at the top of the list. I'm just finishing Rick's 3rd hat, with one...
I've actually been busy making hats.
I shipped some, which have been received and am working on others. I thought it prudent to give the owner a chance to comment rather than bring it up. Also, it seems a little inappropriate for me to drive the conversation in this thread.
When one is lucky enough to find an original seller, they do not seem to value them high. I have now found and resold two souvenirs that were marked and dated WWII era with a military name & rank, one for $25 and the other about the same. The one I found recently was just $9.99 but has a broken...
Thanks for the clarification Major, et al!
That certainly jibes with the story & actually makes more sense than the hat companies he identified given Stratton's main focus.
Thanks Joao. I was joking, actually. I didn't look it up, just assumed a hat on a head & body that big would have a pretty wide brim or it would look really silly.
Another hatter's tool I had not seen until I picked these up - kind of a poor man's conformateur- are these hard 1/8" + thick cardboard head sizers in all 4 ovals. They range from 6 3/4 to 7 7/8. Should be useful in making band blocks someday when I've got the time.
The fella I bought them...
You will note, if you compare it to the Cuenca, that the start of the weave - the "button," I believe - is very different. Also, the straw doesn't dry and get as brittle as a Panama, but is just as light, and very strong. Buntal bodies can still be found in women's hats - Leko even sells some...
Mike, that is one of the very bodies I found & sold to Garret. You guys got lucky - I needed the cash ;-).
It's a great piece of history, and I'm glad Bob made you such a beautiful hat from it. Bravo!
I did find another similar WWII era parabuntal like this recently, but the tube is not as...
