I understand your passion with straws. It is a not entirely, but significantly new arena, and one I look forward to seriously venturing into when I (soon) get caught up. Which of these was blocked on the modified open crown block you posted in the hatters tools thread?
Scott, I've been away for a while and have had to catch up (in multiple ways), but in reviewing your work over the last year or so, I am truly and sincerely impressed with what I've seen you produce.
It is plain that you love doing this, that you want to and are improving on a daily basis, and...
Terry, I guess - and it is a guess - that if you steam it and iron it well, the stitch holes will close up.
Joao, I understand, appreciate and actually agree with you about trimming old westerns, but I took TJ's comment about the stitch holes showing to mean that he does not intend to cut this...
Oh! Well, a little WD-40, sandpaper and oil - and polyurethane if needed, ought to take care of that. Treating it like an old cast iron frying pan should yield good results, I think ;-). My brother is a welder and should, I hope, be able to fix the broken connection.
Not sure where the rust you mention would come from Joao, there being (I think) no source of oxidation, but I'm no chemist so will defer and simply say: Well done! I love thinking outside the box, and this is a great example. We take inspiration where we find it - out of the mouths of babes if...
I just won this very old J.B. Mast curling shackle (~100 years old, I reckon) in an eBay auction for $29! I lost the auction for another, and a very old rounding jack that went for very reasonable prices. Did anybody else here get lucky?
It was right off the line and was lacquered for a western hat & pressed into an open shape but was totally unfinished (thus the "raw designation). Blocked to 7 1/4, it has a nominal 3 3/4 brim, not yet trimmed for uniformity. I don't know if they have bigger sizes. I have not inquired or...
Couldn't agree with you more Joao. I'm a huge nutria fan. It is extremely durable and the quality is as good as 100% beaver in my book, but less of the cardboard finish that characterizes many of the westerns.
I have noted that nutria felt does not seem to hold a stretch well, but that's...
My uncle used to smoke meat with cherry. Haven't tried burning it, but had a couple rounds here (I seem to have lost) that I was going to use for smoking.
Black oak is great, but this stuff, live oak, has even better BTU's. Yes, there is a stray pine chunk or two in this pile ;-)
Mostly...
No hat work for me this weekend. Two hats and two cords of wood cut & stacked.
First this hat:
Then this hat, a Nutria Brand nutria gaucho hat.
If anyone is wondering, blue oak on the right, black on the left.
Terry,
You are very welcome! It looks great. In response to your modest second post, I will say that a quality hat takes several well executed steps. I can only take credit for the first few - cleaning, blocking, foot making (very important, that one) pouncing & sweatband. The color...
It's actually both, I believe.
I take the "ready to wear in 30 seconds" claim to refer to drying time after spinning out what we frequently call naphtha, but back then was just gasoline - used with a stiff brush to clean oils from the hat. The spinner could also be used for pouncing (sanding) -...
Thanks HatsRme, Moontheloon, Lt.hats, Harv, MiamiBruno, Frunobrulax. This was a lucky purchase on eBay a while back, misdescribed as a really tiny size, but fortuitously a 7 1/8. I don't think it has any lacquer at all, and it is a dream to wear.
Moon, that Fed has great lines & I really dig...
