I've bought my first pair of gen-yoo-wine vintage shoes. They date from the 1940s and were unworn. They are in great shape, but they seem a bit "brittle" and the glue holding the brand label to the inner sole at the heel has dried out. There is one very small abrasion, but for unworn vintage...
My first pair of vintage shoes - thanks to Babydoll for the tip!
They date from the 1940s and were completely unworn, but they feel a bit brittle. I'm wondering whether the leather needs conditioning and how to find those wooden shoe forms. The brand is Tarsal Tred.
I should change my name to Alice Brown ... Mostly brown bakelite, and a bit of green. The small buttons and buckle are intended for things I'm making, or at least imagining I'm going to make. One of the larger buttons is going to "freshen up" my winter coat for next year.
Just read Nella Last's Peace, which is a selection of diary entries from post-war austerity Britain. Great stuff if you're interested in social history.
I'm going to keep visiting wartime Britain through the short story collection Good Evening, Mrs. Craven, by Mollie Panter-Downes. And I've got...
CINCINNATI — Maj. Thomas C. "Tom" Griffin, a B-25 bomber navigator in the audacious Doolittle's Raid attack on mainland Japan during World War II, has died.
His death at age 96 leaves four surviving Raiders.

Making chicken stock, which I haven't bothered to do in years. Reading about rationing has inspired me to stop being so lazy and resume my slow food efforts. I have no plans to begin living on wartime rations, but I am going to try making Lord Woolton pie tomorrow.
I'm sorry to hear of your loss, John. I'm still mourning the loss of my old husky, but now there's room in my heart and my home for Finn, who helps me with my sewing by lying on the fabric because he thinks it's a dog bed.

Mixing seersucker and broadcloth?
I'm nearly ready to start my first dress from a vintage pattern, and I've picked out a grey and white seersucker fabric. I thought a straight shirtwaist would be too nurse-like, and I'd like to make a V-neck yoke and sleeves in a different, solid color. (This...
I tried on these Rieker laceups today. They are light as a feather and fit great, and the uppers are sewn to the soles rather than glued. Really nice shoes.
Rieker also makes fall/winter oxfords.
There's a new book out that looks like it might be very helpful for working with vintage knitting patterns:
The UK title is Knit Back In Time, and the US title is Vintage Design Workshop. See author Geraldine Warner's website for more information.
From the official US book description...
I've found the illustration I was looking for earlier, showing a fisherman-style sandal with a low heel. There are plenty of modern variants out there for all sizes and widths.
Simplicity 4102
I've got my eye on some Clarks:
I've just started looking at vintage ladies' shoes on Etsy and Ebay, and I was wondering why I saw so many deadstock shoes and others with very little wear on the sole from the 1940s. I've read that shoe leather was rationed, so I had expected that most people would have worn out their shoes and...
That's actually a Schottische, played in a rather funereal style. There are some interesting photos of the Henry Ford era in the contradance documentary Together In Time.
Contradancing to a jig in Nelson NH with Dudley Laufman calling in 1964. (There are still dances in Nelson and Dudley...
