I don't recall learning many rules about dining. My parents were relatively civilized at the table so I guess we picked that up. Mainly my brother and I weren't supposed to speak at the table unless asked a question. It was a time for the grown-ups to talk about their day. That's how they were...
I'm sure you know not to put it in a dryer. You could probably lay it between 2 towels and gently blot some of the water out of it so it isn't dripping wet. But you may be right about the instant shrinkage...hot water and wool.....! From what I know about shrunken wool sweaters, it is permanent...
I used to work in a dry cleaner shop, and if someone brought in a wrinkled up tie they had tried to wash, it was usually hopeless. We couldn't get it to look like new after it was washed. Silk ties are usually dry clean only.
This is the wrong era, (it's 1983), but it is soooo bad maybe it can be an honorable member of this thread. Could it be a joke? I know I didn't wear anything like that in 1983!
Sometimes in old 20s movies you'll see a girl who looks like she has bobbed hair from the front with big waves over the ears, but when she turns around you can see that in the back the hair looks like a figure eight on its side right at the nape of the neck. It's flat enough that from the side...
On a related note, when I was 14 my doctor assured me that all cramps were psychological. And to this day I only believe about 1/2 what doctors tell me. I realize they don't have the time to research everything for themselves. They mean well, but they are just repeating what they've been told...
LD...step away from the computer! You do NOT need any more buttons! Honestly, ladies, when she says she has a big box of buttons...she's talking about a box that's 2' x 2' x 2'. And that's not counting the ones in picture frames on her walls. LD is the Typhoid Mary of the Button Collecting...
I think you have a new business LD!
I apologise for this being a bit off topic, but we often talk about the frustrations of sewing. In another thread on the lounge was a link to this really funny site about decorating in the 70s

Thank you Zendy. One of the great things about that pattern was no sleeves to put in! But I'd rather do 100 sleeves than one collar. I never can make them come out right. Everyone's work looks great. Seeing all your work makes me want to keep trying.
Good grief LD! You already made the bridge jacket. I haven't even taken the material I bought that day out of the bag yet! It looks great. What exactly was the problem with that pattern?
Hi Dale, My parents (married 1934) did the foxtrot to everything. My dad always said you could just change the speed and the rhythm to match just about everything but the polka, or the cha cha, but the footwork stayed the same. That's why it was my dad's favorite...I think that and the polka...
However long microwave ovens have been around (the 80s?), that's how long I've been using my pyrex/ corningware in the microwave. I haven't had a problem yet. But it's good to know what could happen.
I think range meant oven, as opposed to range-top. I was just looking for new pyrex/corningware to replace ones I've dropped over the years and to get rid of all the plastic pieces I've got. I really hate serving or eating from plastic. So now I guess I'd be better off getting them from thrift...
I think this will answer many of the questions.
