"better" always needs to be understood in context, "in terms of what". Horsehide is very durable, with better resistance to abrasion than cowhide of the same thickness. It tends to have tighter grain, and tends to be stiffer, and thus take longer to break in. Once broken in it is very soft...

People are never satisfied with what they have, and have to mess with it. It ain't broke. Don't try to fix it.
If you really want to do something, roll around in some dirt, and wipe it off.
Just wear it. Usually shiny leather will naturally lose some of its luster after you've knocked the new out of it.
Resist temptation to accelerate the process. If you want to accelerate it, wear it more.
