I bought a few sheets of 1/4" craft foam at the Rag Shop or Michaels. I have to cut it myself, but I can get quite a few strips out of one 10" x 14" sheet. If I need it thicker, I can easily double-up. Cheap and glue-free.

Mike,
Consider how close you are to limits of the size when you measure your head. I'm on the very upper end of a 59. The softer hats, like the Federation, fit well in a 59, and form themselves to my head. A 60 Federation would simply be way too big. However, the stiffer hats (mostly the...
Oh, YES
I love that color combo, Steve! Way to dress up a black lid. I love the contrast idea on the black, and have often thought about a a chocolate brown ribbon and binding. BRAVO!:eusa_clap

Vintage Glasses
I picked up a pair of old metal framed glasses at a flea market for $20, and they seem to be in great shape. They aren't quite wide enough for my face, but I like them anyway. Would their be any harm in having somebody replace the lenses? Also, should I hold on to the original...
I have a friend who is one of The Fallen (wears only baseball caps and calls me Indy all the time). I might have found a crack in his anti-hat shell at last. He likes the hat that Clint Eastwood wore in Pale Rider. It may not be a fedora, but it's a positive step. Thing is, he has a BIG...
The Modern (Hat) Condition
I guess it's all about what the market contains. Nowadays, a durable, high quality fedora is hard to come by, and even the great hatters of old are slipping (Stetson, Biltmore, HJ). As many have said on COW when comparing hat brands, it's all about what the hat is...
Resident Miller Champion
I think,at this point, I'm the strongest supporter of Miller Hats on the forum. I don't know what happened with Joel's Raider hat. I have one that is really nice, no stitching problems or anything.
I'm not an expert on durability and all that. I only wear my...
Agreed, for the most part
Stetsons aren't complete trash. I've had worse. But I've mostly had better. I recommend any of the Akubra's of fedora styles. Better hats, better prices. I also strongly suggest browsing Miller hats. I bought an open crowned Indy Miller in brown. Nice dress...
The Best Way to Go...
I've seen plenty of Bogart hats all over the net, and I've seen plenty of pictures of Mr. B on this sight. I haven't seen a single off-the-shelf hat that does the real thing justice.
That said, since your willing to pay $250 for a hat, I recommend custom all the way...
Indy vs Indy
I think the Peter Brothers is a Milan style "paper" straw, but I'm not sure.
The one on Ebay.... I see it on Ebay every time I do a hat search. They shouldn't be that hard to find. At any rate, if it's the bash you like, you'd be better off having Art or Bob copy it. Rare or...
How to go about it.
If I want advice before bidding on a hat from ebay (or anywhere else), I try to present the pertinent info without mentioning the source. If possible, I copy the pictures from the website and post them alone. It gets you the info you need without identifying any auctions...
This one's easy!
I think we have similar tastes, JJ. If I had to pick, knowing I wanted either a wide brimmed fedora or a homburg, I would dive for the black homburg. In fact, if it were a true 7 1/2, we'd be competing. The picture is fair, the description is very thorough, and it's hard to...
Many Answers
CasaBlancaChuck; The Campdraft does come open crowned. I usually shape with steam, but I recently experimented with a spray bottle of cold water on a beat-up hat. I found that I could exert greater control in hand shaping, and had less chance of damaging the hat. Faster, too...
My Campdraft
Don't bother looking for my older posts on the Campdraft. I removed those pictures. I JUST posted some new ones after reshaping with a bit of cold water. Her they be...
"Friends" fans might get that one. ;)
Anyway, my malodorous Campdraft has returned from it's Australian holiday, at last. They changed out the liner, and that seems to have fixed the problem. So, for anyone not sure about hatsdirect.com, I can assure you that their service is A-1...
Hi everybody!
Well, time is tight, so I'm changing my original "For Trade" Dobbs to "For Sale"!
It's not very old, and pretty close to new condition. Dobbs Fifth Avenue, size 7 3/8, tan fur felt. Very soft. Edge is folded under and stitched... I think it's called "welted". Brim is 2" and...
Hey, remember this thread?
I finally spotted Adam's new Drover on the "whirlpool of death" episode this week. It looked brand new in the show, got rained on (soaked), and lost it's band by the time the show was over! I'm glad I got to see it and know which one it was. I've wanted a 3"...
