I remember Stuart Smart who according to the above article, ran the movie theaters in Port Hope for 60 years, from 1917 to 1977. I know he kept going longer than that but can't swear that he was still manager when they closed in 1987. So we will just say, between sixty and seventy years on the...
The Capitol Theatre, Port Hope Ontario. An atmospheric theater built in 1930, it was one of the first theaters built specifically to show talkies.
It was a movie theater until it shut down in 1987, then reopened in 1994, and now is used for live plays and concerts.
A picture and some history...
Veronica - those look like typical working men's terrace houses from the mid 19th century. I can see a livery hand living there, if he was skilled with horses and held a responsible position.
You say you were going to "Cookout". Does that mean a restaurant named Cookout or you were going to a family or neighborhood cookout? In either case, it does not sound like a formal occasion. Were there any other casually dressed teens there?
Tried something new tonight, steamed cauliflower with 4 cheese Alfredo sauce. It was good, took the curse off the cauliflower and less calories than pasta.
Who was it said she didn't need a man because she had a dog that tracked mud on her clean linoleum, a parrot that cursed at her and a cat that stayed out all night? Lol
Some people would rather be in a bad relationship than face the horrible loneliness of being single. Nothing new about this, history is full of bad marriages.
When I was a kid our phone number in Port Hope Ontario was TUrner 5-5851. You didn't have to dial the TU part, just the last 5 digits.
Then they changed it to 885-5851 (no more TUrner). Then they made it so you had to dial the area code too, 416-885-5851, then about 15 years ago they changed to...
Has anyone tried silver colloid or colloidal silver? It is supposed to kill all kinds of bacteria, mold spores, viruses etc. and it should be safe as it contains nothing but water and silver.
You have given me something to think about. Casting my mind back, I don't really know of any difference. The only thing that comes to mind is that we aren't used to silence because of radio and TV. It could be that 100 years ago people did not expect to be nattering constantly.
I think 2 men...
I think the 70s feminists sold them a bill of goods and laughed all the way to the bank. Now they are wondering what the hell happened, and why the Disneyland of "I can have it all" never came true. But they never question whether what they were taught to believe was even possible.
"There's a whole generation of women, my age and a little younger, who are educated, intelligent, accomplished but alone and childless because they refuse to date or marry "beneath themselves". They refuse to become involved with men with less intelligence, staturs or wealth than themselves."...
I heard of a family getting sick from drinking their orange juice out of a pitcher with lead glaze. Apparently the acid in the juice draws the lead out of the glaze or dissolves it. The pitcher was made in Mexico, this was in the 1960s.
I wish you could have met my grandparents. Both born in the late 1890s. Holland dutch, grandpa was 5'4", a cement mason, a tough customer, a scrapper. Grandma was 5'10", daughter of a bargee, a hard worker and very positive in her opinions. The only person I ever saw who could give Grandpa a...
If you really can't live without Guss pickles you can order them online (minimum order 1 gallon).
Or, try making your own. Don't forget you will need a rock and a board ha ha. I remember my great aunt Gladys explaining to my sister in law how to make pickles, reaching into the kitchen cupboard...
In Europe, experts have traced the downwind signs of ancient Roman lead mines and refineries by the lead in the soil. It can hang around for a long time.
