Vintage Car Thread - Discussion and Parts Requests

If you hold the brake pedal down and it slowly goes to the floor, it is likely a master cylinder not holding pressure. If it seems to hold pressure, the leak is likely elsewhere unless it is real bad. And, if it was that bad you would see the fluid dripping on the ground.

If a wheel cylinder is leaking the backing plate and shoes could be soaked and not much run out. If you hold the brake pedal down in the driveway does it stay up or slowly go to the floor?

I'm not worried about the engine so much as other parts that wear out and need attention. Like the brakes, hydraulic system, or electrics. They can easily cost as much as the engine for a lesser car. Did you know they use a unique brake system with 2 hydraulic pumps and 2 accumulators that work...

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

Lizzie I think you know "politically correct" originally meant that your opinions were identical to the Communist Party's official position. As in "Comrade, have you ever deviated from the party line?" "No! no! no! I have always deviated WITH the party line". Ha ha ha old Trotskyite joke.

I have seriously considered buying a Rolls Royce of the 80s, you can buy very good examples in the US for $25,000 or so. But the cost and complexity of repairs scared me off. Everything is a unique design exclusive to Rolls Royce, parts can't be had anywhere else, and repairs require special...

    He Chose the Wrong Woman

Last night I watched The Big Clock with Ray Miland, Maureen O'Sullivan, Rita Johnson and Charles Laughton. Miland works for Charles "Captain Bligh" Laughton as a $30,000 a year magazine editor ( in 1948 dollars). He is about to leave on a vacation that has been postponed for 6 or 7 years by...

Have you guys tried any Canadian made Brunswick records of the twenties? An audiophile friend, and record collector, told me they are extremely good, very well made, on equipment that was state of the art for the times. He played me one, and even my tin ears could tell the difference.

Another factor was, most radio broadcasts were live. The musician's union had a ban on recorded music but I don't know if this was 100% or only for certain shows. This eliminates all the quibbling about recording quality and leaves only the quality of the broadcasting and receiving equipment...

old candy bars were called lunch bars?

English author J.B. Priestley wrote about his first job, when he was a teen in the 1890s. At lunch time he would go to the "Arcade", an early shopping mall. There he would buy slabs of dates, nuts, and figs at a "health food" establishment which he used to "murder hunger". It was the cheapest...

old candy bars were called lunch bars?

In the 20s and 30s, and into the 50s candy bars were thought of as a meal replacement by many. You missed "Chicken Dinner" and "Vegetable Sandwich", two chocolate bars first made in the 1920s. Chicken Dinner survived into the 1960s. Today you can still buy meal replacement bars. They pretend to...

would you wear a army helmet while firing WWII - Vietnam era firearms?

If you want to wear your war surplus gear, the firing range would be the place for it. As opposed to the Post Office or the IRS building.

What do you call a dog with wings? Ans. Linda McCartney. That joke is an antique now. I remember when it was new.

When was the last time you heard someone called a cake-o? It was a favorite of my father's. Derived from cake eater, a dude, a greenhorn accustomed to soft living, I suppose preppy or yuppie would be the modern equivalent.

Have you seen this? Warren Buffet and Paul McCartney sitting on a park bench in Omaha? http://time.com/2982204/paul-mccartney-warren-buffett-selfie/ It says they were relaxing after a vanilla ice cream, in front of the ice cream parlor. No word on their discussion of the prospects for the...

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

When Elvis Presley appeared on the Milton Berle show, Berle took the opportunity at the end of the show to tell the world what a gentleman he was. Apparently his wild rock n roll reputation had preceded him to Hollywood and Berle was surprised to find what a quiet, cooperative and well spoken...

Funny coincidence... just last night I watched a 1 hour Lucy - Desi Show episode from 1957, featuring guest star Fred MacMurray. It was the one where they went prospecting for uranium near Las Vegas. I haven't thought of him for years.

I bet you could do this and no one would say a word. Especially while you had a gun in your hands.

    What's For Breakfast...

I have been trying to eat healthier too. So this morning I had a cup of coffee and a toasted bagel but made it a cinnamon raisin bagel with peanut butter and had a banana with it. Very tasty and I like to think the peanut butter and banana made it a little healthier than a bagel and coffee.
