I just took a look at Armscor's website and the home page states that they manufacture their firearms from investment castings and CNC machinery. I think that pretty much rules out using any WWII era equipment. Below is the exact quote from their home page.
"The manufacturing of our firearms...
Renault, where in Texas are you located? I'm in San Antonio and have quite a few older firearms. I may be in need of a "geezer" that knows what he is doing to work on one sometime :)
I made them an offer on a hat that was very reasonable and not too much lower than their BIN. They counter offered with a very small discount and the last time I looked the hat is still there. They have some nice hats for sale but I haven't seen any that I was following sell.
For what it is worth, I have a Canadian Stetson with the same sizing tag behind the sweatband. Maybe they used that tag in the UK too. You should start a new thread on the hat and I'm sure some of the more knowledgeable collectors could give you some more information. Great hat you have.
Bond, that is a great looking Resistol. I'd love to find a Resistol like that.
Welcome Lecky, great looking hat. If I had to guess I would say early 50's on the date but I'm no expert. I'm interested in seeing what the more knowledgeable members say about the date.
1961MJS, I've been lucky too. There are quite a few old pistols out there that were bought, never fired and have been sitting in their original box for many years. I find hunting for them as much fun as finding them.
Buggknat, that's an interesting story about the machinery. I've been...
Colt are forged steel. I'm not sure about Rock Islands though. I would think they probably are too. They are made by Armscor in the Phillipines and have a very good reputation.
If you take your time and look around you can find a nice used Colt in the $600 to $800 range. Bud's Gun Shop online has pretty good prices when they have new Colts in stock. I bought a new 1991 Series Government model from them a few months back for $875.00. If you are patient, Colts can be had...
The other day I was at the grocery store and was wearing a Stetson Open Road. The young man at the checkout counter said "I like your hat man....it's not really a cowboy hat but kind of is". I thanked him and told him it was a Stetson then while I was paying my bill I casually mentioned it was...
DesertDan,
A Rock Island 1911 is a nice pistol for the price. Depending on the amount of your refund though you might want to consider spending a little more and getting a Colt. If you are only going to have one, it might as well be the real deal!
Buggnkat,
I've been collecting 1911's for many years and have managed to find some very nice ones, both military and civilian. I've got a good friend who has a company that does estate sales. He calls me whenever there are some interesting firearms. So without his help I would be finding moth...
Buggnat,
That's a nice looking Compact. Rock Island makes a very reliable and reasonably priced pistol. They are hard to beat for the price.
Since you are an old school 1911 guy I thought you might enjoy these pictures. It is an all original 1945 Remington Rand I picked up a few years ago...
Thanks for the info.
What is the proper name of that type of ribbon? I have done numerous searches on the internet and can't seem to find anything similar to it. I found 1/4" grosgrain ribbon but it is not the same as the 2-Ply type ribbon found on most western style hats.
Stearmen,
I actually knew two of the men who flew these P59's at Muroc. I worked for them in the oil and gas business when I first got out of college. I spent a lot of time with them on wells and became very close to them. They were both fighter pilots in the Pacific Theater before flying the...
Does anybody know a source for the basic 2-Ply hat bands put on most cowboy hats? I need to replace some black and silver 2-Ply bands on some old hats and would like to do it myself if I can find some of it. I can easily find grosgrain ribbon but am having trouble finding the 2-Ply band. Thanks...
