Next step- I installed the waist and cuffs and thought I was doing pretty well, so I moved on to the zipper. I somehow managed to get the bottom ends almost and inch off from each other and the lining is off as well. So now I have to take it back apart and re-do the zipper.
I think I'm going...
So I've been working on my project Avirex. I made and sewed on new pockets and my knits from G&B arrived today (I'm replacing the knits and zipper). I re-painted the jacket with Createx airbrush paint to resemble a depot re-spray job. I think it's coming along well..

Thanks guys- I'm pretty happy with myself right now:rolleyes: - even if my wife is irritated that we went from no sewing machines to seven in a month...:eusa_doh:
The leather is from an old jacket the wife had- easier to just tear it up than go find a shop and buy new material. I think it's...
I'm not really sure if this is the right forum for this, but anyway...
So I've been picking up vintage sewing machines and experimenting with them on leather- the ultimate goal being to teach myself how to make jackets (or just how to sew...). I don't want to invest in an industrial machine...
HI
Sorry, haven't seen one there for a while. The place is like a big thrift store- sometimes you really find some good swag, sometimes nothing...

Here's some of my stuff. I have WAY too many of these things. In addition to everything else I also have one of those French-made copies of the WWII German rubberized cycle coats mentioned above.
Favorite first- this is a wool regulation officers overcoat dated 1953 essentially unworn and like...
Reading this thread made me go dig out my Burberry- I've had it for years, and rarely worn it. It must be English as the tag says it's a size 58. It has the button in liner, but unfortunately someone's dog must have chewed it in two spots- nothing I can't fix though.

Replica "Luftwaffe" pilot jacket- what do you think?
This is another one of those replica Luftwaffe pilot jackets. This example and a similar "panzer" jacket were sold by Sportsman's Guide here in St. Paul MN. I have seen this jacket on e-bay regularly for WAY more than what the Guide sold them...
This is a good place to look around:

The Guide generally has a decent selection of overcoats and other nifty surplus stuff

So I spent some time last night with my "first pattern" WPG Irvin. I added some color with Createx airbrush acrylics. I couldn't get the lighter color I was looking for, the leather is just too dark. but I added some brownish-reddish tint to the leather and gave the entire jacket a nice finished...
I've had good results in the past removing some unfortunate artwork from the back of an aero using techniques picked up from Jerome on the VLJ

I want my Irvin to be a little darker and have a bit more of a reddish undertone, more...
Yep- 5 degrees F here in Minnesota, wore my 4 year old WPG all day- it does the job...
I'm still going to paint it to match one of the originals though, I want a slightly more realistic look to the leather.

I bought a WPG Irvin almost 4 years ago- first version, not quite as nice looking as the current version. Don't worry about the sheepskin holding up, There has been more than one occasion where I've caught it on something and was sure I ripped it, only to find no sign of damage. The current crop...

"Our RAF turtleneck is completely faithful to those worn by British submarine officers during WWII"lol
I didn't know the RAF was part of the RN- I also didn't know that B-17 and...
My biggest issue with WWII vintage jackets is that they HAVE seen action- many of them, particularily if they have provenance are essentially artifacts that need to be preserved. I feel nervous enough wearing my very common but still 40 year old mid-60's G-1.
That's the big advantage to repros...
