Picked this up yesterday from a market stall on the town square...for a mere 2 euros! It's not as dusty as it looks in the photo; it needs a little attention and it will be perfect. Fits well. It's one of the Marke Greif German hats.
That's really the way to go when the price becomes foolishly high. I suppose a collector going after some rare item is an issue that goes beyond merely buying a hat. However, when buying to wear, if someone is willing to go past the 200-300 mark they might as well get a hat made and get exactly...
There are several second-hand clothing shops here in the Netherlands which have a fair stock of what look like new-old-stock hats. There tend to be a lot of similar-looking hats, a lot of black homburgs and you can tell that though they were made in the heyday of the hat, they're also relatively...
Unfortunately Ebay has a generous supply of greedy people. And so often these tin-pot "entrepreneurs" are selling things they've acquired for peanuts and not happy unless they've turned a twenty-fold profit. Then again it mirrors the general economic culture and folk keep on supporting it.
It may be time to revive the trend and be the only person wearing a black W/C. If you do it with enough panache, people may follow. :) As long as the waistcoat is cut in the evening dress style.
Day off today... braced heavy flannel trousers, shirt (no tie), knitted waistcoat and tweed jacket with suede elbow patches. I need the coat because I hardly ever switch the heating on. If the coat comes off I can replace the waistcoat with a submariner's jumper.
It's much easier and quicker by hand. Sewing on the fly buttons takes longer.
Many of the modern toy-looking machines have the same blind-stitch function (you can also do it on many overlockers). Personally I don't think it's anything like as invisible as a hand-sewn blind hem...or a pro blind...
I don't doubt it, but I wonder how you will do the hidden stitch required for suit trousers (rather than casual trousers which are often hemmed like jeans) on your Singer at home?
If you're going to spend $1,000 on a suit, it shouldn't be off the peg; at least it should include some alterations if it is off the peg.
Are you buying this only for the wedding, or do you expect to get service from it after the wedding? The dark blues are good, but might not be ideal for...
Well...I charge 225 euros for trousers and that's a starting price for mostly machine-made with regular details. When it's mostly handwork and different details the price goes up. I made someone a linen waistcoat two summers back and it was 185 euros. I don't think 80 nicker is too much for a...
The shirt colour has been prescribed by the company.
Who on earth chooses black shirts with tan for daytime uniforms?! You'd have to be colour-blind or extremely style-unconscious. On the other hand, anyone with a superior attitude to Walmart stackers and 'store clerks' probably needs taking...
At one time it was uncommon to have any pockets at the back. They simply weren't needed because a man had enough pockets in his coat and waistcoat. In drafting manuals of the 1890s-1910s (specifically those of W.D.F. Vincent) you see suggestions of a single rear pocket, but most trousers were...
How is it possible to see if those waistcoats are white or just light coloured? It is summer after all and the reflected light lightens them still further.
