I have never found any way to save a dry rotted sweatband but have been using Pecards's Antique Leather dressing on all my vintage hats with sweatbands still in good shape. It has worked great and I have no complaints. I even put it on new sweatbands when I first get a hat. It does a great job...
Thanks Josh. I don't know if Churchhill made this but the case is very similar to Alan's Churchill case. Also, Churchill was a Byer/Rolnick label. I have one of Harry Rolnick's business cards shown in post #44 below...
I can't see when that ad was posted. Is that an old ad by the same Seller or a new one by the new owner? Same price and lengthy description. Very strange if the new owner is listing it for what they paid.
PS: I'd love to own that hat!
Edit: I found where the Etsy shop "CluckaDuck" that listed...
I think you are right about the age. I have nothing to confirm it but it I believe it is an early 1960's manufacture. It is a very well made hat with fantastic felt. It is a western though and is stiff like most westerns.
Charlie, I haven't received my Milan yet but received an email from Art...
Thanks guys. I've actually had it for quite awhile. This is an old thread but I just added that last photo because somebody was asking if J. C. Penney offered custom made hats.
In my original post I stated it was a 124 block. I misread the label. It is a 122 block and the label can be seen in the last auction photo. I have never seen a yellow label like that before.
I think you gentlemen are correct and this hat has been refurbished somewhere along the way. I think...
Seb,
That surprises me that you don't see a lot of Akubra's in Australia. Is that just in the metropolitan areas?
I also second your opinion on buying a hat from HatsDirect. 1mach1, you could order a hat from them and if they have it in stock you would have it before you leave in 3 weeks...
Welcome to the forum. I have a Penney's Marathon "Beaver One Hundred" western hat that has stamped on the sweatband "Made Expressly For Walt Martini". It also has it's own special suitcase. I purchased the hat from Ebay and don't know anything about Mr. Martini but he obviously had the hat...
You should be able to feel the hard reed if you lightly pinch the area where it is connected to the hat body. Personally, I love unreeded hats. They are just so much more comfortable to me. That is why I got excited for you and made my initial comment that started this whole discussion:)
These two photos are the ones that made me think it was unreeded. I can't see where the reed is connected. Also, as Alan suggested, it looks like fabric and not a reed between the sweatband and the hat body.
Justin and Alan,
Thanks for your comments. Even though the manufacturing tag is not very visible it look older to me and I just couldn't imagine it being a wool hat. Did Stetson even make wool hats back then?
Here is a Royal Stetson I recently purchased off of Ebay. It has no model name anywhere on it but is very similar to my other Playboys. It has a Playboy style ribbon and 2 1/2" brim with a single row of stitching around the brim. The felt is very soft and lightweight like my other Playboys. The...
