The jacket pictured in post #11 was mine (sold it last year). I ordered the jacket new through a local leather shop and had it customized to my specs (size, delete hand warmer pockets, no side buckles, etc). Here was my experience (this is my personal experience / opinion, and not meant to be...
I'm not sure if the SFPD is JL's "house leather." From what I understand the SFPD is what they use on their police jackets and is 3.25oz - 3.5oz. I have a small swatch of it (about 2"x3") and to me it looks very similar to the leather Schott uses. It is soft, which makes me think it won't crease...
I was trying to get customer feedback. It's the same reason we read reviews on Tripadvisor before booking a hotel and not just asking the manager of the hotel. If you look at my original question it was "Is anyone familiar with Johnson's SFPD leather?" I want to know how this leather holds up in...
My mistake... after some more research it appears that I was using "Chrome" or "Chromium" interchangeably with "Chromoexcel (cxl)." It appears that chromoexcel is Horween's unique method of chrome tanning leather. For example, Vanson's competition weight leather is chrome tanned, not...
I thought CXL (chromoexcel) was a type of dying and not exclusive to one tannery...? I could be wrong. As for Johnson's SFPD leather it is an "aniline" leather which I'm not familiar with and is made especially for Johnson Leather for their police jackets (hence the name SFPD). Alan said the fit...
I am getting a custom leather jacket made by Johnson Leathers. I have narrowed the leather choices down to either their 3.25 - 3.5oz SFPD leather, or 4oz CXL over-dye (not sure if it comes from Horween or another tannery). I have the sample of SFPD and the CXL is coming with my fit jacket. The...
So it begins... down payment made. Should have the fit jacket next week. Alan is going to make me a D-pocket similar to a Buco J-24, but with a few custom adjustments. Went with 3.25-3.5 SFPD black leather and satin lining. All silver hardware. Now the long 8-ish week wait.
Ton,
I've seen your jacket on the forum before and it was the whole reason I reached out to Johnson Leathers. That jacket is beautiful. JL doesn't have the CXL overdye leather anymore, but they do have a 3.25-3.5 SFPD leather that is very smooth and soft. I'm looking at doing a d-pocket in it...
On eBay if that makes you feel safer.

Hello,
I am considering ordering a custom D-pocket jacket from Johnson Leathers and was wondering if anyone could speak to their quality, or even post some pics of their jackets? I live in Michigan so going to San Fran is not an option at this time, which makes this a "sight unseen" adventure...
Couple of inquires but it is still available at this time. Since I first listed it I have discovered that Fine Light Trading so longer exists. That means these rings are gone. These are only going to go up in price (seeing them in the $6-700 range on eBay for sterling version). I'm asking $400...
Glad your still you're still loving the J106! It is a beautiful jacket and if it had fit better it'd still be in my closet.
I have never owned a pair of White's before but I've heard good things. I'm pretty sure I'm going with the single mid-sole, but still debating the CXL or plain smooth...
I sent my measurements to Kyle over at Baker Shoes as I am considering go with a pair of White's Nomads. I have a couple of questions for those who own a pair of Nomads before putting in an order.
1. CXL or smooth leather? I will be wearing these boots for both daily wear and riding my Harley...
Thanks to everyone who has answered. I was able to try on a pair of RW 2990 the other day at my local RW shop. The leather was ok, but I didn't like the smooth sole (especially for motorcycle riding), therefore they are ruled out as I can't justify the cost of having them resoled.
I haven't...
Therefore the leather should be the same, or at least similar. I'll check out the RW 2990 then. Really wish I could get the 2966 in the US. I don't understand why RW sells some of their nicest boots in Europe only...?
Case,
Thanks for the reply. I was debating between the Red Wing 2990 and Chippewa 1901m48. I really like the Red Wing 2966 (soft toe version of the 2968), but they were not released in the USA and are only available in Amsterdam and Berlin (neither ship to USA). Have you seen the newer...
