Nov. 1938 HOME & GARDENS: A Home With Hitler

Homes and Gardens is indeed British and still going strong http://www.homesandgardens.com/ It has always been aimed at a middle aged, middle class, demographic which tends to be politically and socially conservative…..the sort of people you’d associate with words like “respectable”...

    Remove My Crown??!!

......they'd probably like the US back as well. Then they could teach those uppity colonials a bit of deference.

1930s WIDE BRIM TWEED FLAT CAP (for sale)

that's two sizes, to a Euro 60/US 7 1/2. Possibly. I think the tweed might stretch that far, and the leather sweatband is very soft (and can always be removed and refitted or perhaps just partially unpicked). You've put me on the spot really, I mean I couldn't guarantee it, but if it was me...

    Remove My Crown??!!

apparently they edited the film so that HM 's grumpy arrival looked like her departure in a huff. This is one of the oldest tricks in the book, used for years in film of political demonstrations, strikes etc. e.g. police attack crowd, crowd fight back, film is edited to show the crowd fighting...

1930s WIDE BRIM TWEED FLAT CAP (for sale)

yes, US 7 1/4 or UK 7 1/8.....or Euro 58 (much as I hate metric, using Euro sizing does save confusion) If you keep growing your hair it might even fit eventually! (I saw the Carnaby Street picture......) These wide brim hats are rare enough anyway, but pure RHS in that size. I'm just...

where can one buy correspondent shoes in the UK for a reasonable price?

Quite! The correct name is co-respondent, as in divorce proceedings. Reflecting the period view that such shoes were somewhat louche and only worn by cads, bounders and gigolos.

    Vintage Sunglasses

that is a very typical 1940s shape, I've seen dozens similar. I can't see there's anything especially 'feminine' about them, and if you like them why should that bother you anyway? Go for it.

    Vintage Sunglasses

Edward, those shouldn't be mirrored. They are (or were until recently) RAF issue and have very dark brown lenses with stainless steel frame. The pattern is pretty much unchanged since the 1950s and is based on that of WW2. They are as good a quality pair of s/glasses as you'll find and well...

    A-2 Labels

J.M., I can't spare one of my precious original tags but if you pm me I'll send you a used Eastman A2 tag. Fold over or cut off the Eastman bit before you stitch it in and it will look pretty convincing.

there is nothing you can do about the stain to the Mallory. In fact it will get worse as you wear it and within weeks the entire crown area will disintegrate and turn to a highly toxic powder. This powder will make you go bald and cover your head in running sores. But don't despair! I am so...

    The Palm Beach suit thread

thanks for that info! I haven't seen vanish for Silk/wool, I'll have to buy some. I did use the vanish powder to spot clean on a pair of cream wool flannels, with fingers crossed and knowing full well that it would technically eat the wool. They came out great, but of course the fabric will have...

on the lighter side I'm very fond of Al Bowley's version of "The very Thought of You", but basically I'm with the Baron, I prefer 'em dark. So perhaps GLOOMY SUNDAY, especially the Artie Shaw/Pauline Byrne version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsbIvUx3CBc
