1960s NYPD HORSEHIDE BLACK LEATHER POLICE JACKET by MIKLOS SAS with liner

1960s City of New York Police Department patrolman's black leather jacket, by the leading post-war maker, Miklos Sas. I am 38” chest, 5ft 7”, 10 ¾ stone and normally wear a size 38 jacket, and this fits me fairly well over a woolly jumper, though it might fit a 40” better. Black horsehide...

    1940s 50s GERMAN "LUFTWAFFE" LEATHER BIKE/FLIGHT JACKET 38-40

Next jacket up is an original mid-20th century German black leather cyclist/utility jacket. Jackets like this were made from the 1930s to the 60s and are often referred to as “Luftwaffe” jackets due to their popularity with WW2 fighter pilots. I'd say this one was from the 40s or 50s, but I'm no...

1930s BLACK LEATHER JACKET by AERO/LEVI LVC 2002 - horsehide "Thunderbird"

OK guys, I'm bumping this thread from 2014 as this same jacket is up for sale again. I've amended the posts to keep it up to date, so prices etc are all current. Stunning copy of a 1930’s LEVI STRAUSS BLACK LEATHER MOTORCYCLE / UTILITY JACKET by Aero. This is one of a limited number made around...

Dating Vintage Stetsons by Liner: A Field Guide

thanks for the input! If you're right that's great - I thought it would be later than that. I'm sure I read earlier in the thread that they started adding the metric size in the 90s? But certainly in the UK it's common to find metric on clothing from the 1970s onwards.

Dating Vintage Stetsons by Liner: A Field Guide

OK guys, I've quickly scanned through this thread and not seen this particular liner yet. Anyone able to date this OR? American hats are not my greatest area of expertise, but my feeling is 1970s or 80s...possibly later but not earlier?

    Eastman - a new direction?

I don't see this as going in the Averix direction, more as going in the Aero direction of covering classic mid-century American civilian styles. IMO they've been moving towards it for a while. Things like their USN sweaters and T-shirts seem more geared to the vintage/classic style market than...

    Ebay Global Postage Program

It's a blatant scam. The GPP is sometimes charging on items that are not actually chargeable by UK customs, for example because they are below the price threshold. In any case, UK customs is a lottery: most of my stuff sails through customs uncharged. I estimate only about 1 in 4 or 5 of...

    Pre-1950s British/European sportswear and leisurewear

aha! Jacket back. You can just about see it's one piece, or at least no yoke seam

    Pre-1950s British/European sportswear and leisurewear

http://www.moviemail.com/film/dvd/Hunted/ several great stills of the later jacket on this page. I particularly like this one, good clear close up. Pretty sure that's an Irvin style Lightning zip. If you enlarge it you can also see it has faux patch pockets - they are inset like a LL Countryman...

    Pre-1950s British/European sportswear and leisurewear

this is the second (or third) jacket, the non-lumber he wears towards the end of the film. Note the absence of front yoke seams. I can't find a still of the distinctive rear waist.

    Pre-1950s British/European sportswear and leisurewear

Yes, that's the first jacket that he wears. And I've just noticed another thing that's different about that jacket from the current Lewis Lumber - DB's jacket clearly has button flaps to the pockets, the current jacket has press studs.

    Pre-1950s British/European sportswear and leisurewear

I'll be interested to hear your opinion on the jackets. When Dirk Bogarde first appears in a leather jacket he seems to be wearing a Lewis Lumber (or very similar) but it has a one-piece back, unlike the modern LL version, which has a three-piece back (The modern version's back is of course...

    Dark/sad vintage popular music

I’d second the Artie Shaw/Pauline Byrne version of Gloomy Sunday - my favourite version of one of the darkest songs of all time. The tune is supposedly a Hungarian traditional tune, and many of the early/mid-20th century European urban vernacular musics with folk roots are full of dark and...

    Cockpit USA ANJ-4

Actually the kind of wear shown in your pix is absolutely spot on - that is just how the originals wear. If you hadn't said it was an Eastman I'd have taken that for an original.

Taking Proper Measurements On a Jacket

and whilst we're at it, always use a proper flexible dressmakers/tailors tape and never, ever, a steel DIY tape which cannot follow the subtle undulations of the fabric - the difference can be major. Also, be aware that a lot of experienced ebay sellers don't follow the curve of the sleeve, but...
