Here I have an Auctioneer.....an awsome hat with the feel of the old 3X Stetson felt. Silverbelly, bound edge, thin ribbon, wind trolley. Very, very clean and ready to go! Only thing I saw is a litte finish flaked off the sweat where a name was embossed. Sweat is not broke and is in great...
Here is a sort of OR clone I just got. It is an "Auctioneer" (not sure who made it) with all the look but only a 2 inch brim:eek: (Stetson actually made some labeled ORs much like this in the late 50's early 60's, 2 1/4 inch brims) . REALLY nice felt......the awesome liner is red:eek: and...
It should be remembered, that the OR was not introduced as just a western hat.....
Here is a copy of my 1950 ad.....it shows the (now) classic crease.
I must admit, I really like the Catteman crease in an OR.......it just looks classy on that hat. That said, I have a Dobbs clone with that...
The OR came open crown and was not always advertised with a "Rancher" or "Cattlemen's" crease (see the 1948 ad above, shows a standard center crease with front pinches). This same crease was used for many western hats.....but as most westerns also came open crown, many, many, differant creases...
Different hats have always had different levels of sizing (stiffeners) added/or not. The difference between a Bowler/Derby for instance and a "soft" hat/fedora. Or a stiff western and a Fedora......some western hats are very stiff indeed. Back in the day, Stetson even differentiated between...
The hat is wonderful.....but that box.....it is too cool!!!! I love the "No more than the weight of two packs of Cigarettes."!!!!!! And the scales illustration!!!!!

Ok, here is one of my favorites, a fairly recent Stratton longhair finish rich dark brown Homburg of real nice proportions. 5 1/2 inch open crown, 2 1/2 inch brim. Very hard to photograph........Now they no longer make anything but law enforcement hats and a couple of western styles.

Here is a picture from a Springfield Illinois Lions Washington DC trip......June, 1931. Part of the picture anyway.....it is one of those "yard wides".

That is a bummer:eek::(
Does it look like there is a hole behind it or just extra material on top. If the latter it can be pounced off (sanded) with litte effort and a very fine grit sandpaper.
If you do not feel you are up to that........send it back.......for a replacement of course.;)

Open Roads while often given a "Rancher" (actually known by many names) crease all originally came open crown. This same style crease is often found on early 20th century fedoras and homburgs as well. I wear modified versions myself on many new and vintage hats........
The "Open Road" as we...
