Cherry blossoms are out, but still blustery in SF (and I have a sore throat, explaining the somewhat dour expression). VS Playboy in lightweight black cherry.
Ok, well, it's here!
Open Crown:
Liner:
Close up of the "Bismuto" felt:
Center dent (looking very much like an Optimo, if you ask me)
Diamond (straightens the sides out a little bit)
Noggin:
So, with the sticker, I'm surmise that this is from 1976?
It's fairly low crowned and...
Yeah, i don't associate the stitching with "cheapness" at all.
Champ is no older than late 50s/early 60's based on the plastic in the liner...beyond that, can't say. Impossible to date the Borso without seeing more of the hat. Look for any stickers underneath the sweatband/liner. That...
Indeed, patience is a virtue. I finally grabbed a good deal on my Borso after a few months of searching and waiting patiently. I would give eBay another shot.
Steve is certainly not getting rich off of anybody. A skilled businessman he is not, but nor has he ever been intentionally dishonest. At least as far as my interactions are concerned. I'm waiting for a hat still as well. But I'm also quite sure it will arrive in due time.
Well, that's an.....interesting hat.
The "curve" you refer to is the flange of the brim. Different flanges create different amounts of swoop to the brim, as well as different looks when snapped down. At this point I should note I am discussing fur felt hats.
Most hats have some degree of...
All the caveats about modern Bosalinos apply. Reputable seller, they're in my hometown. It's not a cowboy hat, no. But when I think mobster, I think tall crown, short brim.
Thanks gents, I'm pretty excited for this one. I was shocked to win this one. All my other attempts at getting Borsos off eBay have ended unsuccessfully with sniped bids, or hats that ended up too far out of my price range. For some strange reason, nobody else bid on this one. I just got the...
I take it these are modern hats?
Stetson's modern production are just ok. Decent dress hats if you like the modern proportions and blocking, but nowhere near a Stetson of yore which was actually produced by the John B. Stetson company.
Any vintage Whippet in decent condition will be a...
Interesting. Frankly, I'll take anything from before the switchover in 1986.
I thought this one to be older based on the width of the sweatband, felted edge, and overall styling. But the box doesn't seem to be very old. I anxiously await this one's arrival to see the stickers; and...
new line of hats from Worth & Worth
I'm not sure how recent this site update is, but it's new to me. Worth and Worth has a new line of hand blocked hats that look really interesting. The block shapes actually look similar to many an Optimo hat, and they have some really interesting felt...

Apparently I was the only bidder on this vintage Borso.
Any...
Randall tipped me off to pure shea butter, which is what I've been using, although he's also suggested jojoba oil as an easier substitute. I prefer natural methods (you know, being a San Francisco hippie and all :D)
