I just received a new-to-me Panama Open road that needed a bit of a stretch and I found that steam re-activated the stiffener quite well. YMMV, depending on how much stiffener is in your hat, but it's a good place to start shaping.
It will probably need a bit of a stretch every so often. A hat jack/hat retainer wouldn't be a bad investment. If you get it reblocked to a lng oval, that should be a more permanent solution.

I don't think there was any one singular cause of the decline of hats. Fashion is cyclical and nothing lasts forever.
You can get a low grade Panama from Panamabob at panamas.biz, starting at $27.
I would argue that it's better to save for a more substantial offering though.
Regret is a strong word. Even my modern Stetson Temple had its good qualities (and looked pretty sharp on me if I don't say so myself ;))
There are hats I wouldn't necessarily buy again, such as my old wool stingy, but I don't regret buying it because I got a lot of good use out of that hat.
Just looking at a few pictures of the hats, I'm thinking it was more of a stylistic choice of the costume designer than an attempt at a completely historically accurate hat.
Indeed, did not mean to imply that they are incapable of straighter looks/blocks. My Optimo is done on their 52 block. But most of their hats on the website are tapered.
Gama: yes, if it's not straight up and down, it's tapered. Very simple. Although as Job and RLK have noted, a crease can...
Gama, just look at the blocks Optimo has. Taper is not a mysterious thing. Most of Optimo's designs are on the same tapered block. As long as you have a straight on view of the front and sides, you can see if the block is tapered.

Just won this one, advertised as a women's hat by the seller, but looks like a regular Panama...
Well, the photo and first two videos don't really provide a good look at the hat. It's probably between a 2 1/4"-2 1/2" brim. Hard to say anything else definitive without a better look at the ribbon, or at least a level shot which gives a good view of the crown proportions.
