Sure, but if you want waterproof leather -- such as on a motorcycle jacket -- then you probably need the pores sealed, and possibly accept a shorter life (if it's true). I think it's kind of an armchair discussion, since most people will probably never wear out their jackets in their lifetime...
Great observations... that pocket does seem a bit dodgy, now that I look at it. One thing I don't like is that it's so long that the belt overlaps and rubs on the bottom corner of it.
Ukrainian peacoat. This is virtually identical to the one I have. Mine also has the tag which is printed on a piece of cloth and sewn in only at the corner. I wonder if that means it's a fake coat? I think these coats are common enough and cheap enough that they wouldn't be worth faking, but who...
Oren Schott clearly states in the comments thread on the Schott website that the steerhide they use has had the pores of the leather sealed in the tanning process. This does not involve the application of a substance or chemical to finished leather, instead it's accomplished as part of the...
Looking at the Barbour website yesterday the only classic models I could find were the Beaufort and Bedale, neither of which I have ever considered the true classic country jackets. Even in ye olden dayes those were both "urban" jackets being too short for most rural activities or serious...
Thanks Edward. I agree, at that price I wouldn't be out much $$ if it's mediocre. I don't motorcycle so I don't need anything too serious. Shipped to Canada it would around $130, whereas an International would be $900...
Here's an old advertisement. Nice 'stache and tiny helmet.
I have a book which shows two Belstaff Trialmaster jackets from the 1960s. One has the tilted pocket, the other squared up. So you're right it definitely wasn't a recent, fashion decision by Belstaff.
Do you know for a fact or from personal experience that Speedwear makes good gear? I've been...
Question: where might I be able to source some buckles? I have two used safari jackets both of which have slide-through belts and buckles (i.e. no grommets). Both buckles are too roomy to provide much friction, so the belts quickly loosen when wearing, which drives me nuts naturally. I am hoping...
I understand, but with respect this thread is dedicated to USN coats only. We have a thread for "peacoats of the world" which would be a good place to post those pics and perhaps some discussion will generate (link below). I have some pics I should post there, too...
Sizing for vintage military nylon or modern-day military? I posted the official size chart earlier in this thread for the modern day military parkas, although they chart isn't very accurate in my limited experience. Even so, these fit super wide in the chest and shoulders, but a bit short in the...
