I haven't owned a car in over five years. I live downtown and work is only four blocks away. I know that's not common, but I've adapted quite successfully by walking, bicycling and using public transportation (a friend here and now, too).

I absolutely love the French police series 'Maigret' that's set in the 1950s. He's a lovable pipe smoking inspector with a very dry sense of humor. Heck, he even has his own website:
