Buy New, Vintage or Victorian Home?

Another thing-I looked at this cute brick ranch: What the picture didn't show was that right smack next to it is a brand new towering colonial house with an unfriendly "No turning in driveway" sign on the street almost in front of the ranch. There was another large new colonial across the...

Buy New, Vintage or Victorian Home?

Can we talk kitchens? I've looked at over a thousand pictures on home interiors on the MLS and I have to say that aesthetically, interiors from 1970 on are not at all what I would call attractive. There are generally two kitchens I keep seeing. The first are the ubiquitous Home Depot et al...

Buy New, Vintage or Victorian Home?

I was shocked (har har) to learn from two Master electricians that fuse boxes (at least 100 amps) are perfectly safe unless people replace a fuse with one that is too large.

Buy New, Vintage or Victorian Home?

It IS those intangibles that I need! I could never be happy in a sterile new house. (I rented one for six years and it was SO well sealed around the windows that we had a mold problem due to poor ventilation.)

Buy New, Vintage or Victorian Home?

Insulating and monitor heat is a great idea for lowering heating bills in any house, new or old. To do a fair comparison of the two homes, though, you'd have to factor in what temperature you leave the thermostat on, and in how many rooms, and how many hours each day. Some people leave it it 70...

Buy New, Vintage or Victorian Home?

This is very true about the windows, but insulation and sun exposure make a difference, too. I have insulating curtains on many windows in my current house which helps. The windows are from the 1970's and about to fall out! (I'm renting.)

I live in Maine where heating is a huge consideration, but maybe not so much where you live.

Buy New, Vintage or Victorian Home?

One other thing- I ruled out a Victorian because it will cost too much to heat.

Buy New, Vintage or Victorian Home?

I am resurrecting this thread because if all goes well I will be the proud owner of a 1950 ranch later this spring. :) And if this falls though I will always look for a 1950's ranch. Here are some things I've learned about old vs new construction: Linoleum made before 1980 is almost certain...

    anyone wear grey hair?

I have gray hair. I am not afraid to look my age, because that has no bearing on looking good. Someone can look young and unattractive. I would feel uncomfortable with a dye job so that would mean less confidence. I think it's what you believe in which will be what you can pull off best. I may...

The return of the unruly flea market

Where I live there is a year-round indoor flea market that didn't exist a year ago, and I'm seeing ads for another I have yet to visit. Southern Maine was THE place for flea markets, until ebay came along. Now that ebay has fallen out of favor with many sellers, the flea market seems to be...

That's exactly what I think! I've never been north of Orono which is about 2.5 hours south of this town. I would like to visit someday.

1940's Maine Luncheonette for Sale w/Living Quarters!

Can you elaborate on your opinion as to why it would be a loss to buy when you would also have a place to live and a family living there prior made it work?

    The fall of the phone

In the local news about FairPoint, our only phone company option: "According to FairPoint's schedule, between Jan. 23 and Feb. 9, the company will not be able to process orders for new telephone service, transfer service to a new location or add new options to existing service." So much for...
