Congrats Wyrd
That is a fine velour :eusa_clap Definitely made prior to the 40's if everything is original. Interesting how the grosgrain ribbon bow/knot style is similar to the old Bowlers. It may have even been taken from an old Bowler as a replacement for the original ribbon.
In December 09 there was an east coast Ebay seller who came across several original victorian night caps along with a mid 19th century top hat that I'm still kicking myself for not buying. Anyway, the caps went for around $100 a pop. Keep your eyes peeled on the bay and you may find one.
Dan, for what it will cost to refurb it in England you could have a decent vintage one on Ebay. I'll keep my eyes peeled for a good one in our size and forward a link if I find one.

and yes, Robert, I know it is missing the sweatband ;) but the original case and condition of the fur/plush make up for it :D
Paddy, well done :eusa_clap :eusa_clap
Gene, HAPPY B-DAY! (Love it when you bring out that Panama) :eusa_clap

I'm a sucker for an OLD hat...
I'm convinced this one was made prior to the turn of the 20th century:
