Lee Centre Dent
Just received a box of four hats. All stacked up and crushed together.
That's okay- it's what I expected. I've been reviving them one by one.
Here's a Lee "Centre Dent". Previous owner had put in a crude C-crown,
which for some reason I thought was not correct. I wet...
It has taken me about three years to get around to it, but I
finally conducted my experiment to create a summer felt hat.
I started with an American Hat Company Beaver 50 "open road"
style hat. Nice, stiff, somewhat thick felt. I figured it was a good
candidate because it has a relatively...
Here's one I keep in my basement
This one was a huge disappointment. Buyer told me there were no
moth holes. I did get my money back. Wish I had a hat like this
I could wear.
Note the $8 price tag.
As always, please don't discuss current eBay auctions

Driving up the price of that item is no favor to Narwhale. I know he doesn't
have PM yet, but...
I have a dromedary leather bag from the tannery in Marrakesh.
Looks great and holds up incredibly well. But it has been about 7 years
since I brought it home and if you put your nose on it, it still smells
pretty nasty from that tanning technique.
Nevertheless, cool leather and I regret...
I have very much enjoyed this thread.
Personally, I don't own an A-2 and I'm not in the market for one.
But if I were, I would not be surprised to get the kind of response we
have seen here. This site is dedicated to the study and enjoyment
of Golden Era artifacts. Many of the participants...
There is no substitute for handling
Your request is a little bit like asking for the relative quality
of vintage wines. In order to really know about terroir, the differences
between countries, and years, you have to buy and drink a lot of wine.
Rather than collecting a bunch of...
I see you're in California, but you don't say where. Long state.
Local to me, in Berkeley is Al Lasher's. It's a great electronics parts
store. For some reason they have quite a selection of old style
phonograph needles. Best way to get the one you need is to bring
in the old one or...
Love the Stuart. Sorry to hear about the quality control issues.
Given that you had a hard time telling if the fit was right for two weeks,
I wonder if you can tell those of us waiting for our jackets how to tell
the difference between a jacket that isn't broken in and a jacket that...
I purchased my black roll up Borsalino from the original owner.
He said he bought it in 1955. It has an oilskin liner. Just a data point.
One more thing to consider- probably wasn't a lot of trade or tourism
between Italy and the USA in the first half of the 40s and some rebuilding...
You mean the upward curve on the brim? Someone posted an
excellent picture of a young Toscanini here a while back, sporting an
amusingly curled brim. I found the thread it was in, but unfortunately
the thread is badly mangled, presumably from one of the crashes here.
I set to finding...
It says "French PAP" right on the description.
That said, I think it's pretty cool. Obviously not meant
to be something one wears in the street. But in a Tim Burton
or Terry Gilliam movie, it could work.
I just ordered my Hercules with cotton drill lining and satin ("sateen")
in the sleeves. That's what I have had for ~15 years in my Johnson
Leathers jacket and it gives the best of both worlds- coolness (temperature-
wise) of the cotton and the ease of slipping one's arms into satin.
