Yeah, great stuff. I had a subscription to Mad circa 1966 to 1972 - and still have a stack of those issues in my magazine archives. So many young folks have no idea how important an influence Mad was on virtually all comedy, in all mediums, that followed it.
I bought this jacket out of curiosity a couple of years ago and reviewed it in detail, including pics and measurements:
What Price Glory replica A-2 review | The Fedora Lounge
As I said back then, it's surprisingly nice for its modest price - mostly correct construction details, very soft and...
The New Mutants via HBO. Essentially the final film in Fox's X-Men franchise, it was supposed to start a new sub-series, but with all things X-Men having now reverted to Marvel, it's a one-off that finally got a long-delayed release with no plans for sequels... quietly ending a really uneven...
Anne Beatts, one of the original Saturday Night Live writers from the days when it was a ballsy upstart making TV history, not the 45-year-old Beloved Mainstream Institution it is now.
Anne Beatts, Original ‘S.N.L.’ Writer, Dies at 74 - The New York Times (nytimes.com)
A nice little family drama, The Hollars, with a great cast: Margo Martindale, Richard Jenkins, Anna Kendrick, John Krasinski (who also directed), etc.
Family rock Martindale gets sick, and her mostly dysfunctional family has to face up to it. A familiar story, but it's played believably and...
Agreed, it's a good film. Other interesting biopics about Wilde:
2018 - The Happy Prince, with Rupert Everett (who also wrote/directed) as Wilde.
1997 - Wilde, with Stephen Fry as Wilde.
1960 - The Trails of Oscar Wilde, with Peter Finch as Wilde.
As a lifelong comics fan, I also schlepped myself through the Snyder Justice League a couple of weeks ago.
The theatrical release was awful, a total mess, one star. This longer version is both better and worse. It's even more of a slog, but some of the recuts/additions are improvements...
My raised-in-the-1920/30s dad used to say disapprovingly, "I can't see <him, it, name> for beans."
Anybody know where this expression came from, and why "beans" was the point of comparison?
I love most of David Lean's films... but I don't like Ryan's Daughter either. And mind you, I dig depressing dramas more than most people. It just somehow doesn't work for me.... I'm not a fan of Doctor Zhivago either. Like some other elder directors (Hitchcock, Ford), I think Lean lost his...
I had this issue on my old US Authentic HH and blamed its collar stand construction. My direct-attachment collar A-2s from Good Wear and G&B don't hit my throat in that way.
My favorite Hitchcock flick, period.
But you're right, one of the things that strikes oddly on repeat viewings is how cool Jeff is to Lisa's advances... until she ultimately proves herself to be more than just a beautiful socialite.
And don't forget Let There Be Light, Huston's postwar documentary about PTSD that was so disturbing the US gov wouldn't let it be shown until the 1980s.
It's interesting, because so many of Huston's best-known fiction films have an air of enjoyment and fun that's far removed from the...
I don't go by temperature, I mainly switch on the old traditional dates - Straw Hat Day, May 15 and Felt Hat Day, September 15.
But one felt that I wear a lot in summer is my liner-less, vented, light-colored Akubra Cattleman - my go-to warm weather hiking and yard work shade hat.
Two quick Shane-related comments.
In Billy Crystal's one-man show, he describes how in his childhood he was always surrounded by jazz musicians because his father and uncle ran a jazz record label. He tells of being taken to see Shane when he was a little kid... by Billie Holiday! When Shane...
WandaVision on Disney+.
Not everything in it works, but overall it's pretty fascinating if you're an MCU fan. It is certainly very different from anything Marvel's done in their earlier films/series, and it's mostly surprising. The acting and production values are quite good across the...
Apart from one case of the dreaded three-month wait for a style/color that had to be ordered from the factory (a Glen Grey Stockman back in 2007), all my hats from Everything Australian arrived within ten days. Hats Direct has even faster shipping... but it's supported with higher prices and...
I was writing and posted this before the two above posts showed up - it's karma!
The first three episodes (out of of six) of The Luminaires on Starz on Demand.
It's only just holding my interest - mainly to see Eva Green in some outrageous costumes as an astrologer and pseudo-madam. Though I...
Before this thread gets shut down as a political argument, I'd like to mention that for some of us in higher population zones who really want the vaccine, it's not so easy to get so far.
I am over 65 and a prostate cancer patient... and I have no idea when I'll get a shot. The chain drug...
