The new adaptation of David Copperfield with Dev Patel, Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie, etc.
TERRIBLE. Even ignoring my difficulties with the hot trend of ahistorical "colorblind casting" in a period piece, this is a very bad adaptation of the novel. It's played more as comedy than drama, and the...
The Gilded Age is the forthcoming series from Downtown Abbey's Julian Fellowes, presumably about (mostly) wealthy denizens of 1890s New York City. It was originally pitched to one of the networks, but is now going to run on HBO. As Worf indicates, the production has had many delays since first...
Wonder Woman 1984. Just awful, a total waste of time.
2017's Wonder Woman is the only DC/Warners superhero flick of the last decade that wasn't a huge disappointment to me, so with the same director and stars, I was kinda hopeful. But everything goes off the rails here - it's way too long...
Never read them, but I recall seeing a TV adaptation on PBS a VERY long time ago. Per Wiki:
A television adaptation of the Pat Hobby Stories was made in 1987, titled Tales from the Hollywood Hills: Pat Hobby Teamed with Genius, starring Christopher Lloyd as Pat Hobby and directed by Robert C...
Ha!
As someone who collected 16mm Disney shorts in the 70s/80s, I know all about their, um, zeal to retain sole ownership of their library. Disney's lawyers were fearsome to film collectors.
Ironically, we're now perceived as archivists rather than thieves.
Basil Rathbone fans should check out Basil Rathbone: Master of Stage and Screen !
Last night's flick was Beowulf & Grendel from 2005, with Gerard Butler as Beowulf and Stellan Skarsgard as King Hrothgar.
No doubt greenlighted in the fantasy boom that followed the huge success of the LOTR...
I think you're being a bit hard on Spielberg, whose prolific filmography is pretty diverse. Sure, a lot of it is insulin-shock inducing, but his more "serious" films - Munich, Lincoln, Bridge of Spies, The Post, etc. - largely strive to avoid easy sentimentality.
Anyway, since none of the...
Frankly, I lost any remaining hope for this project when it was announced that Spielberg isn't directing.
It's gonna be another entirely unnecessary, and inevitably disappointing, cash grab. Like a big chunk of everything being made these days with "established properties".
Oh, me too! I have both seasons on disc. And I'm thrilled that it's streamable on Disney+.
But I wish that Peggy had had a bigger part in Endgame. It's great that she and Steve got a happy ending, but she only got a cameo appearance.
In the upcoming Disney+ animated series, What If...
Genius musician Richard Thompson's new autobiography Beeswing. Very good, but it only goes up to 1975 - it's mainly about his days with Fairport Convention and part of his time as a duo with then-wife Linda. I hope he gets around to writing another volume that covers his next 40 years as a...
Dark Waters, a recent drama directed by Todd Haynes, with Mark Ruffalo, Anne Hathaway, Victor Garber, etc. Ruffalo plays the lawyer who discovered and fought DuPont's environmental poisoning in West Virginia from Teflon manufacturing during the nineties and early 2000s.
It's a sedate, serious...
Cable recommendation: Tex Avery on TCM Saturday morning!
A quick heads-up, TCM is running a documentary on the great golden age cartoon director tomorrow (Saturday, May 8) at 6AM eastern time, followed by a block of his classic MGM cartoons from 7:00-8:00AM eastern.
If you aren't familiar...
I haven't watched Invincible yet, but I did watch The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.
Despite being a pretty hardcore MCU fan, I didn't like it. Oh, it kept my interest, but it didn't particularly engage me emotionally. The acting and production were typically well done, but I dunno... Sam...
My inner-city high school was too strapped for funds to have a prom in 1973. It was also the moment when "the sixties" had fully migrated to east coast high school consciousness, and traditions like the senior prom seemed hopelessly antiquated and absurd.
It was fine with me, I was a...
A dissenting view on Breakfast at Tiffany's...
I'm not a fan. I have always found this flick massively overrated, not to mention that the production code hampered any chance of its being an accurate adaptation of the source Truman Capote story (where the George Peppard character is gay). It...
Big changes here recently, with a long thread about it:
That's it, I'm out. The ADS ARE RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | The Fedora Lounge
Basically, there are more ads, and on some platforms/systems they're a real pain. But you know, those ads help keep TFL a free site!
Not to hijack the thread further, but if you guys want to discuss the Grateful Dead, please include me!
My own photo taken at the famous Cornell U 5-3-77 show. Not "the best Dead show ever" as frequently voted, but a great show from a very creative period.
Huh, I'm a bit surprised that nobody jumped on this immediately.
Sure, it's no premium repro, but it's comparable to lots of mid-range generic A-2s that are no longer cheap... And it's a lot closer to an original-spec A-2 than most of them. For a hundred bucks.
