What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

I like this quote because it shows both sides of the question: the positive and negative of the Puritan ethos. Therefore it's real history rather than propaganda. I have a feeling that there was a blazing schoolyard-style literary row between William Buckley and Gore Vidal on television in which...

What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

It's great that we have a similar outlook. Like you I don't much care about moving back and forth in gender usage for titles: I say actress but I don't say sculptress or poetess, for instance. What I don't like is to be told that I 'have to' or 'ought to' express myself according to whatever...

What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

I note that you used the word actress earlier in the thread, but then used comedian. ... This shows the inconsistency and confusion surrounding this issue and the way in which attempts to impose 'gender neutrality' can be carried to extremes. My comment was also carefully worded, in the style...

What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

There are people who don't believe political correctness exists and they are the same who won't be happy with your gender distinction. Political Correctness is a continuation of Puritanism by other means.

She is definitely a comedian, she is definitely not an actress. Or comedienne, surely?

I get the pun of course. I work just outside the Square Mile and within walking distance of Threadneedle Street. Thanks for your good wishes: we need them. You might have opened a can of worms with some readers by saying 'England' rather than mentioning the constituent parts of the UK. ...

I had the same problem re. the Marl Grey that Fading Fast went for. There wasn't one in my size. Therefore it would have to be a fisherman's sweater: excellent choice and I really like the idea, but I have several in this genre already and, as you rightly point out, the costs. As I told FF, I...

Agreed. A straightforward review will be enough! I hope the NSC reaches you soon. Re. OKW, I'll keep working on you with positive propaganda.

The OKW WPs are really hard to beat although I admit to being very biased towards them as they are my 'default' sweaters. SWCs have strong attractions as well. I agree that the NSCs are very expensive - more expensive than Guernseys - and I don't quite see why. They look good, however, and I am...

It's cold enough for my Navy Guernsey today which I've dug out as a change from the military Woolly Pullies of the past 10 days or so.

I do have the sewn down and very thick crew neck, but might ask for a polo/roll neck next time. There is a purple-navy mix photo and I have considered that colour.

    Military 'woolly pully' sweaters

@wdw, it's a good colour - I have a crew neck in it and it goes with everything. I have the purple crew neck WP as well. I haven't worn it as often as some of the others, but I like the unusual and understated colour.

    School and college sports

Re. attitudes to sport at college: in my first year at university I had two tutors, one (the older man) was extremely pro-sport, the other very anti and thought it was a 'complete waste of time'.

    School and college sports

Congratulations! I remember getting a couple of school awards for cross country running and a most improved player prize for Rugby when I was quite junior in the school, around 14. One of the things I recall is that sporting achievements were in many ways more highly prized than academic...
