the $64 question

the hide It's actually a cowhide, but to return to the serious matter of tie maintenance, it is designed to iron from the inside so that the problem we've all no doubt experienced of seam marks on the front of the tie from being carelessly ironed, do not appear, or so one's butler told one. And...

    the $64 question

I'm shocked C'mon guys I thought this forum of all places would know.... it's a TIE IRON, with a bakelite handle, and having just replaced the cord, it works magnificently. I suppose one could use the excuse that it's the sort of thing one's batman would have in his kit and not ever be...

    the $64 question

I know what this is, who else does. [/IMG] I found it in the shed, totally forgot I had it, the cord will have to be replaced, but it'll be going to work as soon as my new suit comes back from the invisible menders

    Aquascutum

top shelf I own both Aquascutum and Burberry trenchcoats, and the big A is superior in the most basic sense, as in keeping the water out. Sad to hear they are going the way of all quality goods these days. But how can manufacturers compete with China, you have to look long and hard to find...

    Wifebeaters?

dear me In this country the garment is known as a 'singlet', unless it is blue, in which case it is known as a "Jacky Howe" after the famous shearer, John (Jacky) Robert Howe (1855/61-1920/22) was a champion Queensland shearer of the 1890s. His tally of 327 merinos shorn in eight hours at...

    Cowboy Boots

in/out I haven't worn cowboy boots since my beloved Justins were stolen some years back, but it's always puzzled me why there is so much ornamentation on the shaft when, as I understood it, only women wear the jeans tucked in in a social situation? I travelled through Texas many years ago and...

    memories of magnum

I can't find the original thread, but there was a discussion of the "Magnum" shirt a while back, and someone here wanted it in purple, well I've obeyed the rule and not posted a link, but there's one on the bay right now.

    Foyles War

the heat Kitchen no good? Well sir, he may be predictable, but by god, he's Brando compared to Keanu, and I haven't even lowered the bucket into the cesspit to drag up Antonio Banderas! F's War was OK by me!

holed up I would have walked away but for 2 things, one: the trousers, and secondly, I saw a range of suits a damn sight more beat-up than this one going for HUNDREDS of dollars in Sydney retro shops, as fellow lounger Benny H would no doubt attest, given his presumed familiarity with King St...

    THE UK WIDEBOYS ?

wide eyed My father used to describe the suits he wore just after the end of WW2 in london, and they sounded pretty much like zoot suits to me, one feature was an incredibly long watch chain, a lot heavier than normal. which could be used as a whip in a fight, i don't recall him using the term...

front up Well there's one right at the front on the left nearly the size of a cigarette burn, and I just don't want to have it there, it's just too obvious, so I'm settling to have that one done for 90 bux, and do the rest myself

I kneed it They're about 21" at the knee, and I just found out the going rate for invisible mending is about 50 bucks per moth-hole so i'll have to get the one on the front done, then darn the ones that can't be seen from the front. It's a fair bit of trouble as the menders are over 100 miles...

    Speaking of shirts ... starch?

collared I read that starch was originally used on collars, so that the dirt would stick to the starch and wash out without being ingrained in the fibre, I've also heardthat starch will gradually destroy cotton fibres through its absoprtion breaking them up.

down at heel the cuffs are 1+3/4 inches, and I'm glad to hear I made the right decision, the moth-holes put me off until I realised that there was only one small one actually visible on first presentation, the ones on the back of the sleeve etc we can get around. My 14 yr old nephew was the...
