WWII US War Correspondent Collection / Impression

Actually, correspondents were subject to military law and could NOT just walk out when they wanted. They had to have permission from the overall commander in theater to do that.

    The Pacific

A couple of the guys in my WW2 display group (I really don’t like the term “living history” as we don’t do what they do at places like Williamsburg, just showing off stuff and talking to the public in uniform) have been getting into USMC strongly now and a few of the guys over the past weekend...

Air Show photos some of you might like...

Just got back from a halfway decent local show. We had a threat of rain but nary a drop. We did have very stiff breezes, though. My ride: With a 1941 Ford GP: And I still can't get over how freakishly large I look in this photo! :eusa_doh:

How about his modern glasses and his facial hair? [huh]

WWII US War Correspondent Collection / Impression

You're welcome to do so, as is anyone else on the subject. Except, of course, to document someone's latest find. This week someone was "kind" enough to let me know a correspondent item he'd asked me a lot of questions about was now on epay and that I could bid if I want. I wasn't happy about...

WWII US War Correspondent Collection / Impression

I hope you find a copy. It's a decent article but not the end-all you may be looking for. As for me, I just saw this book at the USMC Museum at Quantico the other day (was on the East Coast on business last week)...

Just got back from Washington DC, photo heavy post!

I have abut 500 shots I took in DC from the trip, just got back last night. Here's a few, scenic and historical stuff. We also hit Philly, USMC museum, Aberdeen and other places in that area. I was stationed at Aberdeen Proving Grounds on active duty, so I know the area extremely well. I mostly...

    The Pacific

At the risk of sounding crass, I can't imagine this being a springboard to anything. The bottom line here is that the focus on WW2 has generally always been the ETO. You can attribute it to many reasons (far more correspondents in the ETO, distances between battles, people not being able to...

Our BBC display in Normandy 2009

AMAZING, I love to see this well-known yet rarely-remembered segment of WW2 recalled at events!

The best films no one has ever seen.

The lover http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101316/. This is a truly breaktaking film, but don't watch it with someone you're not already in a relationship with! [huh] The Lady Takes a Flyer http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051839/. This is a clunker of a movie, but it has several scenes filmed at...

If you could meet one WWII KIA....

Yeah, but the problem with that is that he'd likely not want to talk to you. Remember, the man had an almost "rock star" following he hated and couldn't stand talking with fans. I've stood within 6 feet of the man, at least at his grave in Hawaii. :(

    Reenactment Videos....

But it wasn’t always like that. I know when I got into WW2 re-enacting in 1990, there seemed to be VERY few Airborne folks on the Allied side. I didn’t start seeing large groups of paratroopers until well into the mid 90s.

    Reenactment Videos....

Nice! I’d like to someday get down there for an event, as I’ve heard good things. Right now I’m working at being a correspondent for the startup British magazine devoted to the hobby, maybe it’ll give me an excuse to go down to an event to cover it for the magazine someday. As for the 2nd ID...

Warner Bros. cartoons about Germany, Japan and Italy...

I knew a guy who worked for WB animation in the 80s, he showed me tape he'd smuggled out of the studio of some the far more racist toons they made before WW2. One was called something like "Cole Black and the Seven Midgets" or something like that, with an all-black cast. Prince Charming was...

WWII US War Correspondent Collection / Impression

My primary impression for re-enacting is either that of a news reporter or a war artist. I’m not really into period photography. I do own an Argus Brick and have a Kodak military 35MM on the way, but I don’t really venture into the photography aspect. I do, however, cover events for various...

The best films no one has ever seen.

I thought the opening of the movie was promising (a astronaut who goes nuts on the launch pad) but it fizzled into a “you got to kidding me” premise. The scene in the bar was downright silly. The Wind and the Lion: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073906/ Waterloo...

WWII Correspondent Howell Dodd - Anyone with Information?

There's not much on Dodd today other than his pulp work in the 50s. I have very few examples of his work but I always liked this one, from the AP employee magazine in 1944: And one of Dodd's hats, now in a private collection/museum in France:

    Bill Mauldin's "Back Home"

I have been collecting Mauldin stuff for over ten years now, have written extensively on his life and work and have one of the most complete collections of his work and publications in private hands. I have been on "Mail Call" on History Channel on the subject in 2005 and have advised libraries...

New WW2 re-enactor magazine coming soon!

Lucky, my eye! I too was into this 20 years ago and I know all too well how you had to either know someone in the hobby or stumble across a group doing something to get into it! I was on my own doing events for over a year before American Rifleman magazine did an artcle on the hobby that...

New WW2 re-enactor magazine coming soon!

I just read about something new, WW2 re-enactor magazine. I haven’t seen one yet so I have no idea how good it is. I just wish they’d post a few sample pages from an issue so people could see what their magazine looks like. There have been a few attempts over the years to make a magazine...
