COW is one of the most poorly moderated boards of any I've ever posted on. Actually, they probably take the cake. I frankly have no idea what conflict the mods over there see in locking that thread.
They have a newly established Facebook page, so you might be able to reach out for...
That outlet is still there, drive by it all the time. Family friends from Japan often make a special trip to Berkeley just for the North Face outlet.
Hatco diluted the brand long before they decided to open an outlet store however.
I know John uses FEPSA stuff too. IIRC, what he said back on Club Obi Wan (so this is going back a bit) was that his rabbit felt was better than Akubra's, and that it was a blend that was made for him exclusively. I don't know for certain, but in my head I remember this as being before John...
Another complicating factor is that Winchester does different felts for different hatters. John Penman says his rabbit felt isn't the same as others (he's a guy who holds his cards close to his chest). And it actually molds quite easily, I hand creased mine into a pork pie just for fun.
But...
Normally, I'd say silverbelly, but something about Akubra's dye mix never looked right too me. Too much on the taupe side. Your mileage may vary.
Nobody here is going to advocate for owning just one hat however. ;)
Well, not like literally sitting on the floor. The back half of the store has floor to ceiling shelving with stacks of hats in various sizes. The front half, with the Stetson dress and straw hats, has more traditional retail hat racks.
Penman is probably the maker of the finest Indy hat one can buy, as well as more affordable versions.
I'm a sucker for provenance though, and the relaunched Herbert Johnsons, with what is as best we know, the original blocks, look mighty nice. Not the cheapest, but, they do indeed fit the...
Mr. Temkin sure has put a lot of thought into his take.
And I wouldn't say that I disagree with most of the general thrust, but I would differ on specifics.
The other caveat is that I happen to live in a city where different peoples' norms and mores are clashing all the time in some way or...
I quite like the heathered felt that Bob at Black Sheep uses, I understand is a Tonak rabbit felt. It has done well in the rain, despite being a relatively thin/lightweight felt (after Bob's finishing).
FEPSA is Optimo's supplier, so their quality is certainly top notch. To my eye, FEPSA's...
I love it! Of course, that would be pretty obvious I guess.
The original hat (back a few pages) was Alan's Stetson Star. Bob really nailed the profile from just a few pics.
There are a bunch of el-cheapo wool hats that were apparently given and/or sold as gifts from MJ floating around the internet. I do believe they were Dorfman Pacific.
But moon is on the money. If the deep flange on the brim (which causes the upward curl), what you really want is a nice fur...
I checked the sites/instagrams of a few makers, and can't find anybody who is claiming it as theirs. So apparently, it's not: Optimo, Baron, Lock & Co, Bates, or Gary White.
Why is it that you want the brim to be very stiff? If the flatness of the brim if the effect you're desiring, that has more to do with how you finish and flange the brim, than with how much stiffener you add.
