That's quite a delay. I guess once gear was taken out of service it was stored for a while before being disposed of (sold onto the civilian market). I suspect duffle coats didn't take that long since I think there are photos of civilians wearing them in the 1950s but no doubt some "fell off the...
That's a civilian jacket (denoted by the three lines on the tag) made by Alpha. It's a 1990s early 2000s model as indicated by the pocket shape. Enjoy it.
Please note we have a looooong thread devoted to USAF nylon (mostly MA-1 jackets, military and civilian) here...
^ Thanks for the info about BOAC duffle coats. The coal board used to issue them too (in black wool with orange reflective shoulders) and you sometimes see them on e-bay.
I got through the rest of this film last evening and it was pretty good but obviously the storyline was incomplete/half-baked. If one accepts the film as a visual extravaganza then it delivers. Unfortunately as other have said it seems the filmmakers spent most of their time on the visuals and...
I found the presence of such issues interesting in that Total Recall television series, but it was never the focus of any of the shows, and replicants in the series were just machines or other characters; kind of hard to explain, but much different (and I think more realistic) than in Blade...
I'm 1/3 of the way into this film and I'm 50/50 on whether to bother finishing it or not (over the next two nights, roll eyes). I can see it being exactly what Big J said, i.e. Gosling standing there looking blandly at whatever happens to be in front of him. The evil bad guy is cartoonishly...
I was flipping through a Japanese book I have on American leather jackets and there were a few different brands putting our jackets in mid-last-century that could have been possible alternatives. But it's 99% likely to be a Durable based on everything I've seen and read.
^ Too bad she didn't know anything or couldn't remember anything about the possible owner of the original jacket. I suspect it will never be seen in public again.
Time for a visual comparison... 1960s Schott vs unknown date Durable (but probably the same period).
1. Lapels on the Durable are wider (which means move overlap) and are cut straight from the collar. Every Durable I've seen has this straight cut, which I think is the quickest way to i.d...
It's a Durable. Old Durables and old Schott look much different, although I've not seen exactly contemporaneous examples of each. Much different shape, proportions, details, etc.
Why not give her a call? She was still working at that museum as of 2016, so probably still is. Some links:

I find it believeable and in fact likely that only one jacket was used. The movie was made in the 1950s, probably with a small budget over a short shooting schedule, and no significant stunts are done by Brando's character, so one jacket would have sufficed. I think it's telling, too, that...
Here's some commentary on it, read the last four or five paragraphs:

Of course the blogger has drank the "Schott" kool-aid but the info provided by the museum curator is insightful.
