    Born in a suit?

Well, knowing when and how to break the rules requires first knowing them.

    Born in a suit?

Agreed. I'd add that the color of the shoes matter. I'm not a fan myself of brown shoes with blue or gray suits for example. I think that shoes and belts should match up fairly closely. And belts that are intended for blue jeans don't go with suits.

    Born in a suit?

As long as your nails are fairly uniform and clean on your picking hand it isn't all that big a deal.

    Born in a suit?

There are quite a few people who inhabit the FL who are just getting into suits. I see them in many threads. What I wanted were some actual tips and guidelines that some of you apparently think everyone just automatically know but really don't that go beyond simply thinking that you can spend...

    Born in a suit?

I really started this thread to be a discussion about the details that make someone look natural and sharp in a suit (like they'd been born in a suit) instead of a slob in a suit, but I see it has spun out of control into the usual how long I've worn a suit and why "I wear a suit when those...

    Born in a suit?

Yes, most of those things apply to casual dress as well. If you want to look good. That said, if you press creases into blue jeans (for example) then you'll look odd. Someone who never wears blue jeans and creases them looks just as out of place as someone ignoring the things I listed and...

    Born in a suit?

Well, good tailoring and being used to wearing a suit certainly help, but the things I hoped others would mention are things like these (in no particular order): 1. Posture. Don't slouch. Stand straight, shoulders back, but not stiffly. It is possible to stand straight without being all...

    Straw Homburg??

I have a Dobbs El Dorado. I ordered it from Aztexhats.com. As others have stated it is a Shantung straw hat and rather stiff. It's kind of plastic-y feeling to me like every other Shantung I've handled, but an ok hat.

Me too. And you're getting closer to what I was referring to.

    Born in a suit?

We've all seen or known men who seem to have been born in a suit. You may even be one of them. There's something about their appearance that is absolutely correct and natural in a suit. On the other hand, we've also seen men that just don't look right in suits. You might be one of them...

    Formality; Single-breasted vs. Double-breasted suits

When I wore suits to work I usually wore a solid dark or pin striped 3-piece single breasted in a medium lapel width. Wing tipped shoes, black or gray socks. Solid white or blue button down oxford shirts, button cuffs. Medium width not too flashy ties. That look was considered...

    Pants waist size

I really don't care what the number turns out to be. I just wish that all the pants were standardized on the exact same system. In other words, I'd want a 38 to actually be 38 inches. I hate having to try on clothes at the store to find out what actually fits. It's even worse when...

    VJ Day

My wife is Chinese, but her family left mainland China in 1949 while she was young. She really doesn't have any memories of it. Her mother definitely does, but like most people who are from that time she doesn't dwell on it. She's told me some stories about walking hundreds of miles escaping...

    I remember when.....

I remember - Five and dime stores where a lot of things cost less than a dollar. Shooting marbles at school. Walking to school. Fishing with cane poles and cork bobbers. Bicycles with only one gear. Roller skates that clamped to your shoes and had metal wheels. Cap guns that actually...

    Scala hats made in USA?

I found a Scala panama at a local department store this spring. They had it on clearance for $24. My observations echo yours and it's been my go to hat all summer.
